Music Firdays # 18: On The Record

Welcome to a rather special Music Fridays. Today, I will be taking a look at songs from the Disney show, On The Record. I own the 2-Disc CD but alas never got the chance to see the show. The songs are quite enjoyable though.  According to Wikipedia, I know not the most reliable source the show is a group of artists that have been brought together to record a Disney complation album and somehow end up in a love rectangle. For this, we will be ignoring the plot and just focusing the music instead.

Can You Feel The Love Tonight/I Won't Say I'm In Love/Let's Get Together

To kick things off, we will be starting with one of my favorites from the soundtrack. There is jsut something about this melody that works. I love how it opens with Can You Feel The Love Tonight and it is rather serene and peaceful but then weh go into what I consider the best portion of this song.  Here, we  have a cover of I Won't Say I'm In Love from Hercules. This song was orignally sung by Meg but as you can hear this time, a male sings the song and unlike the qualms I have with that dreadful Michael Crawford cover of Reflection, a male singing that part works in my opinion.  The lyrics in the original song don't limit it to just a female song and a guy can sing it just as well as any woman and the same message is conveyed.  I also really enjoy how they were able to intergrate both that song and Let's Get Together, to the point that it almost sound likes a conservation being held between two people. The song ends with the opening of Belle from Beauty & The Beast and I think that is the only area where the song drags a little bit but other than that I love this song.

I Will Go Sailing No More/Just Around The Riverbend/Strangers Like Me

What can I say?  I love the pairings of songs on this soundtrack.  Here we have Just Around The Riverbend, I Will Go Sailing No More and Strangers Like Me paired up. It works sure the pairing is pretty obvious for the first two songs but the lending of these songs just feels natural and each song is given enough time for the audience to recnogize the tune before they move onto the next song. While not as good as the first song, I still enjoy this one.

A Change In Me

Now funny story, this song is actually from the play adaption of Beauty & The Beast.  The first time I heard this song was listening to this soundtrack and from what I can gather. I assume this song in the play version of Beauty & The Beast is sung by Belle singing about her time with The Beast has changed her. Perhaps for the better and made a different person.  Now that's just my guess as for this version, I can't compare it to the original as this is the only one I know but I think it is a great song all the same and makes for a great coming of age song.

Baby Mine

Now don't let the video fool, this is the On The Record version of Baby Mine and I just felt this was a great song to close out with. Because if you have been reading A Look at Disney for a while, you'd know that I have quite the fondness for both Dumbo and this song. I think this is one of the best covers that I have heard of this song. The song updates itself a little bit for a new generation and of course with a new singer it is going to sound different but I think they do one of the best things here by treating this song with respect and they don't hamper with it too much. They make it a little different to make it unique to the show but in the end, it is the timeless classic.

There you have it that was On The Record. Trust me, I barely scrtached the surface with these songs. Don't want to spoil the soundtrack for you guys too much.  But I may return to On The Record on later Music Fridays. Join me next week when I take a look at Jazz covers of popular Disney songs. As I Jazz It Up.
