Disney has produced some of my favorite Christmas specials & movies. Here today, I'm going to countdown the Top 6 Disney Christmas Specials. First though, I'd like to give an honorable mention to Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed In at The House of Mouse which our opening picture comes from. While good, and it shows a lot of the classic Disney Christmas stuff, it does tend to lag and there many other Christmas specials out there that I enjoy more from Disney. Also note that while I have labeled this as a countdown of Christmas specials, some of these are movies and shorts.
6. Disney's Christmas Fantasy On Ice
Now to kick things off with, I'm going with a Christmas special from '92. Disney's Christmas Fantasy On Ice. This is set in Disneyland as we follow Bronson Pinnchot and his niece Alice as he tells him the story of how it snowed in Disneyland. The characters had to gather pieces of a magical snowflake to put it together. They got help from Jack Frost. It was pretty cool seeing the characters come together and I remember watching this as a little kid, I thought it was so cool. Somehow I must have blocked out the ice skating routines from this special and only remembered the story. This special has stayed with me all these years and I was able to discover some clips on YouTube. I only ever recall watching it once on TV but it stayed with me a very long time and I was rather sad that for years I could not find anything on this special but finally last year, it came back to me. Here are some clips of the special for those of you that haven't seen it. Really, the only reason this is going at # 6 is because I only remember watching it once.
5. The Santa Clause/The Santa Clause 2
The Santa Clause is one of the earliest memories I have of seeing a Christmas film in theaters. I loved it and I thought Scott Calvin was likable Santa and I liked the whole idea of someone taking over that position. To me it is a fun and cute little film. I enjoy it and I also like The Santa Clause 2. To be perfectly honest, I actually think I like The Santa Clause 2 a little bit better. I don't know what it is but seeing Scott having settled into his role as Santa after 8 years was fun. Then the whole idea of him needing to find a Mrs. Claus and seeing him go on all those dates made the film really enjoyable. I also think the characters had better interaction with each other this time round. As for the third movie, the less said, the better.
4. Santa's Workshop
Last year was the first time that I had ever watched this short and it was a lot of fun. I loved this short's take on Santa and his workshop. It made his workshop just looked so magical and gave it a sense of whimsy that I loved. I mean all of the toys came to life and practically built themselves. Also this Santa seemed like a really fun Santa as well. I know talked about this one too recently but I would put it in this Top 6. Because I think it is really good.
3. Mickey's Christmas Carol
This short was my introduction to Dickens' classic tale. Needless to say this is one of my favorite adaptions. All of the characters were cast perfectly as the right characters from the tale. It is such a joy to watch every year and in the short amount of time, it gets the message of this tale across quite well. I will say though I saw this before I saw Mickey and The Beanstalk and when watching that short I was confused as to why the giant was a bad guy but once I learned about Willie The Giant, I got over that and I have been able to enjoy both shorts quite well. Now I'll be going into more detail when I review this short.
2. Mickey's Good Deed
Everything I saw about this short in my reviews stands true and this is one of the most beautiful Disney shorts that I have seen. Mickey was able to think of someone who was worse off than him and put them before him in order to give them a better Christmas. This is one of the rare Christmas shorts that can be both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Everything I said about this short is so very true and I don't think I have been so touched by any other Mickey short.
1. The Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade
This had to be my # 1 for this Top 6 as for me it's just not Christmas until I watch The Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade. Every Christmas morning after I have opened my presents I tune into ABC and for the next few hours or however long the parade is, I'm whisked away to the Disney Parks and get to enjoy the ceremonies while also getting a preview of what the company is working on. I know most people would say that their favorite parade is the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade but this one has always had a special place in my heart and I can remember more of these parades than any other parade that I watch. As I stated in my Regis tribute, Regis & Kathie Lee, then later Regis & Kelly would host the parade and that was a lot of fun but for the first time last year there were new hosts. Ryan Seacrest and Nick Cannon were the hosts last year and while they did an okay job. It just wasn't the same but that did not stop me from enjoying the parade.
