Hello and welcome back. Today, we will be taking a look at a cute segment from Mickey's Once Upon A Christmas. So join me as I take a look at A Very Goofy Christmas. Let's begin.
The Plot
The main plot of this segment is Goofy trying to get Max to believe in Santa again. The segment opens with Goofy finishing off list letter to Santa. Through some mishaps going through a mall and being Goofy, Goofy finally gets his and Max's letter off to Santa. Later on, while shoveling snow, Max tells Pete about them sending their letter to Santa but Pete, being who he is tells young Max that there is no such thing as Santa because Pete has been around a long time and never seen Santa Claus. Later on that night, Goofy and Max go to help a young family by taking them a Christmas dinner as they couldn't afford it. Later on Goofy as Santa comes in to surprise the kids but one of the young children pulls off Goofy's hat and beard, leading to Max to feel that his dad tricked him. Later that night Goofy tries and tries to cheer Max up but nothing is working. Some of these moments include Goofy using Max's teddy bear, Old Stuffed Bear to sing Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town. I like this touch as it gives this segment contitunity to A Goofy Movie and moreso, An Extremely Goofy Movie as Old Stuffed Bear makes a reappearance in that film and in the Goofy/Max timeline, this takes place before Goof Troop. Now another one of the big moments is Goofy waiting on the ceiling waiting all night to see Santa. Later on in the short, Goofy gives in and gives up. This moment here reminds me of when Goofy found Max lied to him in A Goofy Movie. Max tries everything to cheer his dad up and at one point, even dresses up as Santa.
Now this works at first but the truth is revealed when Max as Santa leaves and almost falls off the roof and Goofy sees that it really his son. Max tells his dad that he didn't let his dad to be let down with everything he did for him. That's when Goofy tells Max that Max has never let him down. Aw. Then right at that moment, who should fly overhead and deliver the gift that Max wanted but Santa.
I really like this segment as it shows that kids need something to believe in and how easy it is for them to stop believing when someone like an adult tells them their truth. With that I'm saying as we see with young Max, when Pete tells him that Santa isn't real, we see how fragile, a young child's beliefs are and that they need something to believe in. Plus it also shows that Goofy is an awesome dad and it further enforces why, he's the best Disney Dad in my opinion.
Characters
Now there are only two characters that really touching upon here. Therefore, I won't be breaking this down any further then needed. Let's get started.
Max voiced by Shaun Fleming
I really felt bad for Max in this segment. By just one person, his entire world was crushed and to him, it seemed pointless to believe in Santa because someone had told him that there is no such thing and it just shows that kids will sadly listen to what adults say even if those adults are big old jerks. I think another reason, I felt for Max was because what do you do when your told something that you believe in is a lie. Of course, it would put him is a grumpy mood but he of course comes around at the end and I loved that.
Goofy voiced by Bill Farmer
Goofy was just awesome in this segment. Everything he went through shows how much he loves his son and he wasn't willing to give up so easily. Goofy went to great lengths to get Max to believe again and I think by Goofy trying to get Max to believe again, it showed how much these two cared for one another because when Goofy gave up, his little boy tried to cheer him up and in turn, it showed what lengths Max was willing to go to for his dad. That was just so touching.
My Final Thoughts
I cannot suggest this segment enough as it's great and very touching. If you love Goofy and Max, check this out. Join me tomorrow for A Christmas Shorts Showcase review of...
