Scouting Week: Good Scouts

Hello & welcome back to Scouting Week.   Today, we are going all the way back to the '30s as I take a look at the short, Good Scouts. Now this short came about before the Woodchucks existed.  So in the short,  the boys were just scouts. Also this was the second appearance of Huey, Dewey, & Louie.  With that out of the way, let's begin.

The Plot

There isn't much of a plot here. Rather, it's just watching the boys and Uncle Donald going through different scouting related activities while at Yellowstone. Such as hiking and putting up a tent. This is one of the earliest shorts where we Donald as a foil to his nephews and for the most part it works well but I have to say that Donald is perhaps too mean spirited to be a scoutmaster in my opinion. Though he does get a lot of funny moment such as trying to chop down a petrified tree, being attacked by a bear after he tricks the boys into thinking that he's hurt and falling on geyser.

Now all in all, I like this short but I do feel that Donald did overshadow his nephews a wee bit and that was a bit disappointing to me.  But that is just minor.   Still, this was a fun watch.

Characters

Now there really isn't any need to break the character down further. With that out of the way, let's begin.

Donald Duck voiced by Clarence "Ducky" Nash

This was one of the earliest shorts, where we saw Donald in a leadership role and for the most part it was rather humorous but again, I felt that Donald overshadowed his nephews.  Ah, well.  He was his usual funny self all the same but that was just disappointing to me.

Huey, Dewey, & Louie also voiced by Clarence "Ducky" Nash

As I've been saying throughout this review, the nephews took a backseat to their Uncle Donald.   I don't know if that comes from the fact that this was only their second appearance but I think that is part of it.  Don't get me wrong, it was still a lot of fun watching them in one of their earliest roles.  They were pretty loyal as scouts though.

My Final Thoughts

While not a great short, this is still an enjoyable watch if only for one of the earliest appearances of Donald's nephews and it does try and capture the scouting spirit quite well.  However tomorrow we will be taking a look at Disney film from my childhood that truly captures the Scouting spirit. Join me tomorrow as I take a look at..
