Sterling Holloway Spotlight: His Narration

Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney and welcome back to the Sterling Holloway Spotlight.  Well now, we've looked at all of his characters and now today, we turn to the reason why Sterling became my favorite VA, his narration. I do apologize but this article will be full of me showering a lot of praise on Sterling.

The Cold-Blooded Penguin

Something interesting I've always found with Sterling is even when he isn't voicing a character,  you get the feeling that the characters that he was narrating about, were still his characters such as the case with Pablo and two other characters that I'll mention on this article.  And even though I  said in my original review that Pablo was so good with his body language that Sterling didn't really need to be there but it added so much that it made the short much more enjoyable and it has just made me cherish this childhood favorite all the more.

Peter & The Wolf

I'll admit it had been a while since I watched this short but I went back to check it out and it was great.  The best part in my opinion are two parts,  the way he gets frightened when the wolf comes and  in the beginning, when explaining the instruments and was able to change the register of his voice quite well. When he lowered his voice,  I was stunned because it didn't sound like Sterling all that much.

Lambert The Sheepish Lion

This is the only time that  Sterling would reprise one of his roles.  And with this one,  I'm still not sure whether or not, it is supposed to be Mr. Stork doing the narration.  My mind is split because I'd like to think that it is Mr. Stork doing the narration but the narration is done in third person and he never refers to himself by Mr. Stork.

Susie The Little Blue Coupe

This is my all time favorite short because of the story and you recall what I said about Pablo up top,  it is so much truer with Susie.  Sterling brings so much life to this adorable little car and he captures the emotion quite well through the years that this short spent with Susie.  If you have not watched this short,  go check it out and you'll understand why this is my favorite short and why Sterling is my favorite voice actor.

The Little House

This short is a great companion piece to Susie as it is a similar story in how just like Susie, it follows a car through her life, this short follows The Little House throughout her life and while this short isn't as high up as Susie as one of my favorites but it is still great because of the way,  Sterling emoted when explaining what the house goes through.

Ben & Me

Now  whereas two shorts ago, I was talking about my favorite,  here is one of my most despised shorts and I've now watched it twice for the blog (the second time was even more painful knowing what was coming).  However having said that, Sterling's turn as Amos was quite good and unlike Lambert, he was narrating in first person as this short was in a way, Amos' memoir and that was perhaps the only highlight of this short.

Goliath II

Now I'll be honest and say that this short is fine but Sterling's narration really threw me off and just felt out of place in this short.  I can't explain it but Sterling's voice seemed to be conflicting with the animation and the atmosphere that this short had set up..  Unlike most other shorts, where Sterling brought me in,  here it took me out.

There you have it, my look at the shorts that Sterling has narrated.  I hope that you have enjoyed this article. Join me next week, when we close out this Spotlight as I re rank Sterling's characters.
