Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney and back to Music Fridays. One of my favorite Disney movies is Tarzan and one of my favorite songs from the film is "You'll Be In My Heart" and today, we will be taking a look at various versions of the song including the original film, version the Phil Collins version that gets play on the radio, the Broadway version and it's reprise and a version sung by the Broadway legend best known for playing The Phantom, Michael Crawford and another one by Kenny Loggins and we will close out with the version from my favorite Disney soundtrack. With that out of the way, let's begin.
You'll Be In My Heart (Glenn Close/Phil Collins)
This version is short but it works as a lead-in for Phil Collins singing and I just gotta say that I never understood the hate he gets, listening to his songs for this and Brother Bear, he does some fantastic work and Disney should bring him on to do more soundtracks.
You'll Be In My Heart (Phil Collins)
Y'know, I've often compared this song to Baby Mine from Dumbo. The messages aren't too different. In both songs, the parent is able to look past the differences of their child and love them for who they are. They don't care that others don't see what they see in their child because like a good parent, they'll always love them for who they are and it also serves as a reminder to their child, don't let others say get you down.
You'll Be In My Heart (Broadway)
Okay, first off I really like having Kala sing it in the show and I know why they did that but having her sing it directly to Tarzan is sweet because these always were her words and I almost like that more because you get more of a sense of her comforting her son and another big difference I noticed is that she singles Kerchak but changing the lyrics from "Don't listen to them, what do they know" to "Don't listen to him, what does he know". I'm of two minds about this change, on the one hand I get it because Kerchak was hard on Tarzan but at the same time, I feel like it loses the idea that Tarzan is an outcast amongst all of the gorillas. It's a minor nitpick as I do like the rest of this version.
You'll Be In My Heart (Reprise (Broadway))
Man, this version is almost even more powerful. In this number Kala is saying goodbye to Tarzan as this comes when he decides to tell her that he is going back to England with Jane and she knows that she is saying goodbye to her son but just as with every other version, she is reminding him no matter how far apart, they are, she will always be with him. That had to be one of the hardest things for her do.
You'll Be In My Heart (Michael Crawford)
I'm mainly taking a look at this version because this Halloween, I'll be doing another Monstrous Musicals and there I'll be looking the Original Broadway Cast recording of Phantom, which includes Michael Crawford and as for this version. I like it as a cover and Crawford has done various other Disney covers, including Reflection but this one is far superior to his Reflection. I was at first taken aback by his voice as it didn't have the same rawness as Phil Collins but rather, it comes across as soft and gentle. And caring. And honestly, that is how a cover of this song should be done.
You'll Be In My Heart (Kenny Loggins)
Your going to have to skip a bit to get to this version but when you get to it, it's worth it. Kenny Loggins is a perfect choice to cover this song and this from a childhood album favorite of mine, which included many great covers by Kenny Loggins and the very sad but beautiful, "Your Heart will Lead You Home" from The Tigger Movie and looking at that song and "Return to Pooh Corner". Kenny has the emotional weight in his voice to carry this song and he pulls it off almost flawlessly. Listening to this one, you can almost hear welling up with pride singing this one because I have to imagine that he was thinking of his children, when singing this number. We have time for one last version.
You'll Be In My Heart (On The Record)
I never thought multiple voices could work on this song but On The Record pulls it off and delivers a great take that gives this song a new life and finds a new way to get across how powerful, this number can be. Not my favorite cover of the song, we've looked at here but it is still very good.
There you have it, I hope that you've enjoyed my look at this wonderful song and some of the many different versions of it. Peace!
