A Look at Disney Investigates: Pound of The Baskervilles (Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers Episode Review)

Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney and we continue our investigation with two gumshoes that are picking up the slack of the cases that slip through the crack as there is no case too big or too small for the Rescue Rangers.  And today, we are looking at the eighth episode of season 1 of Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers, Pound of The Baskervilles.  Many cartoons and other shows like to sometimes do episodes based on the world's most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. Heck, there has even been a cartoon series with Sherlock waking up in the future.   But we aren't here to talk about that but rather an example of a cartoon that uses elements from Sherlock Holmes to tell a story.  Now, this won't be the only cartoon that we look at that does this but I kinda like this one better as it's plays more serious with the story.

The Plot

The Ranger plane crashes at the Baskerville due to bad storm and Chip happens to be reading a book about the detective, Sureluck Jones and here we learn that a mean older brother has been keeping his younger brother out of the manor but soon, the younger brother's dog, MacDuff enlist the help of the Rangers to find the will that the brothers' father left to prove that the younger brother is the true inheritor of the will.   And this gets really fun as we start with the Rangers disguising MacDuff as a ghost dog.

But the older brother, Lord Howie's allergy give MacDuff and the Rangers up. It seems that all is lost but the Rangers will not give up because if they do, the sheriff will come and take MacDuff away but Chip using the guide of his favorite detective leads the Rescue Rangers into solving the mystery of where the will could be.  And this is where the episode gets really fun as there is a secret passage behind a mirror and that leads our heroes to a new location and soon as Chip uses the books of Sureluck Jones to find a trap door and that leads them to the location of the will as it is the office of the brothers' father and there, Chip discovers that they are in the home of the author of the Sureluck Jones books.  Yeah, finding the will was really fun and it really felt intense as you saw the Rangers looking for the things that they needed to prove that the younger brother was the true inheritor of the manor.  And there, they find the will in the office and it soon becomes a game of keep away as they need to try and keep it away from the older brother.  The next day comes and it seems that MacDuff is about to be taken but the sheriff, who also weirdly acts as a dog catcher comes to take him away but the Rangers are able to get the will to him and MacDuff gets to stay and the younger brother gets to live in the manor.  Yeah, this episode was pretty fun.    I really enjoyed it.

Characters

Main Character

Chip voiced by Tress MacNeille

This was mostly a Chip centric episode and as the leader of the Rescue Rangers, he's always fun to watch and I liked how he was able to use the books to help him solve the case.  That was pretty cool to see and it does show some deductive reasoning on Chip's part.

Supporting Characters

Dale, Gadget,  & Monterey Jack voiced by Corey Burton,  Tress MacNeille, & Peter Cullen

Yeah, the other Rangers really didn't get a whole lot to do in this episode but they were still fun to watch and you could see them getting annoyed with Chip's obsession with the fictional detective but to be fair to Chip, that did help to solve the case.

MacDuff also voiced by Corey Burton

There really wasn't much to MacDuff other than being the loyal dog that would do anything to help his master and that came through and through in this episode.

Villain

Lord Howie voiced by Jim Cummings

I loved how Jim Cummings played this character as snooty upper crust character that thought he was above everyone and deserved everything, even if it wasn't left to him.  He was just hilarious in this role and was one of the biggest highlights of this episode.

My Final Thoughts

This episode was a lot of fun and I'm glad that I returned to it as this was treat to watch.  The Rescue Rangers really proved to be pretty good detectives and this case, while simplistic showed their skills.  Join me next time as we look at...
