Sofia Week: The Amulet of Avalor

"With Each deed preformed, for better or  worse, a power is granted.  A blessing or curse"

Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney and welcome back to Sofia Week.   Today, we turn our attention to the Amulet of Avalor.  This is Sofia's most precious item and it has quite a bit of power as we will see.   Now, in this article I'll be going over what it can do and more importantly, it's appearances throughout the show.  Now let's begin.  The Amulet  of Avalor made it's debut in the pilot movie.   When Sofia's new stepfather, King Roland gave it to her and according to the episode of the same name.  He chose it as he saw it peering out of his eye, as he was about to pick up a ruby and saw  the amulet and made him realize that the amulet was the right thing for a new princess as he thought it looked as though, it were something that could protect her.    And  in some respects, the amulet chose her.   Now,  this is so far, the only episode, where Sofia lost her amulet as she took if off and it was stolen by a baby griffon.   That Sofia met earlier in the episode, in the castle jewel room.

Which,  this was a really good episode to show how much the Amulet meant to Sofia and it also led to one of the best songs in the show.

Now,  that we've gone over the origin of the amulet.  Let's go over the powers.  It's first power is discovered in the pilot movie, Once Upon A Princess.    You see after helping to return a  baby bird to it's mama, it gave Sofia, the ability to talk to animals.  Which,  I must admit, I loved her reaction, as she was freaked out by it and then was just like, "I can talk to animals, now.  Okay, cool!"  Sofia did not say those exact words but that is how I think, a 7 year old would react.

In  Once Upon A Princess, we also learn of it's other power and perhaps, the most powerful one of all,  the amulet connects to all, the princesses.   Who usually come to Sofia in her time of need and normally, only Sofia can see them but that isn't always the case.  They usually come and through song teach Sofia, a lesson.  Well, except for Aurora.  So far, we've see Cinderella (who informs us of this power), Jasmine,  Belle,  Ariel and Aurora.   However, there is a comic that sums up my feelings on Aurora.

Yeah,  I know they didn't use Elsa but I don't like Sleeping Beauty and as I mentioned in my review of the Christmas episode, her cameo was just pointless. I'll  be saving that for tomorrow as tomorrow, I'll be going over, what I think the princesses that haven't appeared on the show could teach this little princess.    Now, each princess isn't the episode for long and they usually help to advance the plot.  In order of appearance, they come as I listed the.  Cinderella helps see Sofia to understand the plight of her new sister and while Amber is jealous.  Through my favorite princess song from the show.

Speaking of Amber,  in our second princess appearance, which was Jasmine.  She was really there more for Amber and we got a cute little fangirl moment from Amber at seeing Princess Jasmine.

Now, she came to the sisters as they were having troubles taming a wild magic carpet and Jasmine taught them how to control it and not to give up.  Sofia was just fine but Amber was ready to throw in the towel.   Until one of her idols came along and I'm bit  bummed, this is the only time,  we've seen Amber fangirl out over one of the princesses.  Now, the next princess to appear was Belle and I've already gone over this more then once.  Her appearance  was different from the rest in that she came to Sofia, not to brag through a sub par song.  Now as you saw with the quote up there about the amulet that comes from the show is a nice tie in and at first, I was confused and angered by Belle's appearance but when I read on a Sofia Tumblr,  most fans believe that Belle was used because Sofia's bragging was reminiscent of Gaston.

Which again, will be covered on Friday.   The next princess was Ariel and her appearance was similar to Jasmine as she came to Sofia, to make sure that she doesn't give up on looking for Oona.  As Sofia is about ready to throw in the towel.

The last princess to appear as already mentioned was Sleeping Beauty and her appearance made very little sense to me as she told Sofia to rely on her animal friends to help find her dad, who had gone missing in a bad blizzard.  All, I could think was that Snow White (who is going to appear in a future episode) would've made more sense.

Or as the comic pointed out...

Elsa would've been nice too. Now each time,  Sofia is about to get a new power or a princess is summoned, her amulet glows.

Now, so far.  Only two characters,  Sofia's flying horse, Minimus and Oona have noticed the amulet glowing.

Which Oona notices after Sofia saves her from being tangled up in netting.  And it gives Sofia, the ability to transform into a mermaid, when she enters water.  It changes her entire outfit and when she comes out of the water, she is her purple dress, which is all soaked.

Now, with an amulet that has much power, Sofia has unknowingly created an enemy in Cedric, the castle's sorcerer.  Who on multiple occasions has tried to take the amulet, so that he could use it to take over the kingdom.   The first time was in the pilot movie with a sleeping spell, that he had the new princess read.  Other times, he's tried to get Sofia to give it to him willingly such as when the amulet cursed Sofia with her croak or when Amber was stuck in her butterfly costume.   Other times such as in the episode, "The Amulet of Avalor", he tried to steal it outright from the baby griffon that took it from Sofia.  Though that wouldn't have worked as Cedric himself pointed out,   the amulet has to be given up willingly and Sofia has come close but she never gave it up.

Now,  there is one other teensy flaw that I imagine the target audience wouldn't pick up on with Cedric's plan.  Going back to the quote for a second.

"With Each deed preformed, for better or  worse, a power is granted.  A blessing or curse"

Cedric wants to use it for an evil deed.  Something that is a lot worse then just bragging.   I'd almost like to see Cedric get the amulet to see what would happen to him because I imagine the outcome wouldn't be favorable.  And all I can think is that something along the lines of what happened to Sunset Shimmer, when she put on Twilight Sparkle's tiara in Equestira Girls would happen to Cedric.

Though to be fair, Cedric has turned himself into a sea monster before.

There, you have it.  A brief look at Sofia's amulet and why it is easily, the most important item on the show.   Now,   it has appeared elsewhere such as in the introduction as the amulet is on the magic book that opens the show.

And you can be certain that Disney has made a toy of this, already.

And I've seen a few adult fans such as this  picture from Instagram.  I'll be linking to try to recreate the amulet for a Sofia cosplay.   Join me tomorrow as I continue Sofia Week as I ponder over...

The Parting Wisdom Of The Princesses.
