Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney. Recently, it was announced that Bob Hoskins passed away at the age of 71, Hoskins had been battling Parkinson's and sadly, lost the battle. Edit: It was not his Parkinson's, that took his life but rather Pneumonia I've decided to pay my respect to Hoskins by counting down my Top 6 moments, of one of his most famous characters. Join me as I count down my Top 6 Eddie Valiant Moments. With that out of the way, let's begin.
6. Eddie And Roger's Meeting at His Office
When Roger goes to Valiant for help, we get a sense of how different these two and just how much, Eddie despises Toons but this moment is important for Eddie as it starts Eddie, not only on the path to help Roger clear his name but to also get over his prejudice over the animated characters and realize that even though, a Toon killed his brother, not all are bad and also, Bob Hoskins just plays so well off of Roger, that you tend to forget that Roger wasn't on set, when you watch this scene.
5. Eddie Needs A Spare
This moment right here is just really funny, from when Eddie is falling off the tower after being chased by that ugly Toon woman and Tweety Bird causes him to fall and he meets up with Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. And he asks, if either of them, have a spare. Well, Bugs gives him a spare tire.
Again, Hoskins' comedic timing is just top notch in this scene and his reaction to the spare tire is just hilarious as he has that look of "Oh Crap" on his face. Because this isn't what he meant but Toons especially Bugs can be little stinkers and you can never take their word to be what you expect them to mean.
4. Showing Respect To Betty Boop
In the beginning of the film, we see Eddie at the Ink & Paint Club, we see that the only Toon that Eddie has any respect for is Betty Boop and she points how hard it is now for Black & White cartoons to get any work but points out that she's still got it as she does her "boop de boop" And Eddie agrees and says that "Yeah, you've still got it!" This is a sweet moment as it's show that Eddie is able to look past his bigotry and remember that there was one Toon, that he liked and held no ill will towards. It's a sweet and simple yet very effective moment in showing that there is more to Eddie, than we first are led to assume.
3. Going To Toon Town
This is an important moment for Eddie as here is confronting his past, which for so long he had been trying to forget it and was angry over it. But by going to Toon Town, he had to face the things that he hated most, Toons and this moment right here, I would argue is when Eddie's bigotry truly started to melt away. It wasn't fully gone by this point but it was the start of Eddie getting rid of his bigotry because he couldn't run from Toons in Toon Town.
2. Eddie Kisses Roger Rabbit
This scene is a callback to when Roger kissed Eddie as it was funny and it was used again in the film, but this time with Eddie kissing Roger as a sign that he had gotten his sense of humor back and didn't hate Toons anymore and could laugh again. It's a small moment but it's a big moment for Eddie as this completes his character arc from being the hard boiled, cynical, bitter man that he was at the start of the film to remembering that people always need to laugh and while some Toons are evil, not all of them are bad and it was here, that he was finally over his bigotry towards them.
1. Confronting Judge Doom
This moment is big for a few reasons, first off, Eddie regains his sense of humor in this scene and he has to use it to fight Judge Doom. Speaking of Doom, it's also important as Eddie is confronting his past as he is confronting the Toon that killed his brother.
Remember Me, Eddie? When I killed your brother, I talked just like this?
This isn't so much revenge that he's getting on Doom but he finally gets to confront the Toon that led him to become the bigot that he became and in many respects, this had to be one of the toughest moments for Eddie as he had to re-live, the night, Doom killed his brother here but now, he got to take him out and in a way, fighting Judge Doom was another step in Eddie getting rid of his bigotry. This is of course, just how I view it but this moment is in my opinion, the most important moment for Eddie as a character as it is here, he breaks out of his bigotry and learns to embrace humor and that can be used as a tool.
There you have it, my Top 6 Eddie Valiant Moments. It is truly a shame that we lost Bob Hoskins and this is the role, that he will be best remembered for in my mind and I imagine I'm not alone. I hope that you enjoyed this list. You know, it's kind of funny, I was planning on doing a Top 6 Detectives List and Eddie would've been # 1 on that list but I like getting to do this just as well. Peace!
