Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney and today, we continue our look into the world of investigations. Now, I do apologize for this review being late and I know that I originally said that this was going to be an episode review but this show is so good and underrated that I wanted to do a more overview look at the series. (And it's impossible to find plot descriptions for episodes of this show online). So, let's begin with a plot overview.
The Plot
Our show takes place at X Middle School and follows the exploits of Cornelius Fillmore and Ingrid Third of the X Safety Patrol as we see them work on a case every week and bring down the culprits responsible. Fillmore and Third are good at this because Third is the smartest student at X and Fillmore has a criminal past and was given the option by his former partner to shape up and join the safety patrol or spend of the rest of his time in middle school in detention. Now, the big thing that makes this show work so well is that it's a parody of cop shows, especially '70s cop shows as we see in the flashbacks but like all good parodies, every episode is played straight and that makes the episode so entertaining and actually makes the episodes so entertaining.
Characters
Now, I'm only going to focus on the main characters. With that out of the way, let's take a look at these great characters.
Cornelius Fillmore voiced by Orlando Brown
Fillmore is a hardworking safety patroller that'll stop at nothing to bring down the culprit, even if it means breaking school rules. He'll do whatever it takes to deliver justice but has also been shown to be a very kind and passionate person.
Ingrid Third voiced by Tara Strong
Ingrid Third is shown to be the brains of this duo. She rarely speaks but also is willing to call out Fillmore, when she thinks that he is acting a fool. It is shown in the first episode of the series that she is a transfer student and does have a record herself but during her time at X, she has proven herself to be one the school's best safety patrollers.
Favorite Episodes
I want to look at my three favorite episodes. With that out of the way, let's begin. Now, these aren't in any particular order.
Test of The Tested
Just go watch Mr. Enter's review of this episode as he really touches upon how resonant this episode has become overtime. Here's a quick summary of it
The student body is in an uproar when the controversial S.A.T.T.Y. 9 tests are stolen by an assailant dressed as X's beloved mascot, Lobstee the Lobster. Who is the thief – a student who panicked during the test? Or was it Enid Quintara, outspoken anti-S.A.T.T.Y 9 activist? Fillmore and Ingrid are under the gun – they have only 48 hours to find the tests or Principal Folsom will have the entire school retake the tests.
Throughout watching this episode, you can feel the distress in the students as the tests go missing. It's really heartbreaking to see them struggle with this.
A Wurm In Our Midst
Here's the summary for the episode that I was going to review.
The Library's books have disappeared, and Tony Clementina, X Middle School's local heavy, is all too eager to take credit for it. Meanwhile, an empty bottle rocket made from a can of Carbee Cola leads Ingrid back to the biggest custard spill in X Middle School history, an incident that disturbingly points to Fillmore from back during his days as a delinquent.
Now, there are two reasons I like this episode because A. it deals with stolen library books and as a volunteer librarian, that breaks my heart as those books are very important to me and the other reason I like it is how it delves into Fillmore's past while working on the case and I always like episodes that look into Fillmore's past as it helps to shape his character and show how far, he has come.
South of Friendship, North of Honor
Spring Break has arrived, so Fillmore's taking the time to visit his former partner, Wayne Liggett. In Wayne's new school, something about the Safety Patrol stinks – so much that Wayne's partner Emily had to quit. The prize pralines of the school have been stolen, and the prime suspect is Patrol Sheriff Thrift – who just so happens to be the son of their principal.
Finally, we have an episode on this list just for how exciting it is as Fillmore goes to visit his old partner, Wayne Liggett at his new school and discovers that the safety patrol is corrupted and running things with bribery and fear. Now, yes the idea of southern police forces being corrupt is nothing new but using that cliche on a middle school is exciting and funny.
My Final Thoughts
Alas, Disney has never officially released this show in a proper format. That's a shame as it deserves more love than it's been given. Now, you can find most of the episodes of this show online and I can't suggest that you check out this show enough as it's really good. Sorry, for this review being a bit different than originally planned. Everything will return to normal tomorrow with episode review of the Gravity Falls episode.....
