A Look at Disney Swims with Mermaids: Cool Hand Fluke (Sofia The First Episode Review)

Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney and after a short break due to finishing up college work, we take a deep dive back under the sea to look at more mermaid merriment as I review Cool Hand Fluke.  Now, this is the second time that Sofia The First has done a mermaid episode and it's not as good as the first episode in my opinion and part of that comes from the theme and message of the episode.

The Plot

The plot and message of this episode is rather simple as it addresses the idea of jealousy as we see that Fluke a mer-friend of Oona is getting a bit jealous of all the stories of Sofia that Oona is telling of their previous adventures and the Royal Family are on the surface above Merroway Cove and Sofia heads down by transforming into a mermaid with her amulet and the mermaid kids decide to whip up a gift for the royal family.    Now as the Disney Wiki points out one of the biggest things that leads to Fluke's jealous nature towards Sofia is because he has a bit of an ego problem.

Which this is the other thing that this episode attempts to hint at, is that having an ego can cause one to find themselves in bad situations and the episode shows that with Fluke as his jealousy and his egocentricity cause him to get stuck in a clamshell after attempting  to get a pearl as he thought that would be a better gift than the song that the merkids are practicing.   When Sof rescues the little brat, he shrugs it off and doesn't seem to care that he was saved.     And things only go from bad to worse as observed by the Disney Wiki

Sofia gets him out which Fluke is ungrateful for and is uncaring that Flip's mantacorn horn was broken during the attempt. When Sofia asks what that is, Oona and Sven tell her a mantacorn is a manta ray that has a sharp horn growing out of its forehead which it sheds every year and stores in a cave.

Fluke decides to go and get another mantacorn even after the brat is warned against it but he doesn't listen and does it anyways and his plan goes as well as one might expect as he ends up trapped in a cave and Oona gets super angry at him and Fluke admits that he was jealous of Sofia because of the time Sof saved her.   Everyone makes up and we find out the Manta Ray is actually very nice and willingly gives up his mantacorn to the kids and the episode ends with the kids singing their song for the Royal Family.   All in all, not a bad episode but not one that was too memorable either.

Characters

I'm only going to focus on two characters here as while the other characters like Sof and Oona do play a large role, I don't have a whole lot to say about them.

Fluke voiced by Gabe Eggerling

I think there's a reason, Fluke didn't appear in the next Merroway episode and the focus went back to Oona.  He's a one-note character that is used to convey how jealousy and having too much of an ego can cause you to get in trouble.

Flip voiced by Connor Wise

There isn't a whole lot to Flip.  He's just a Yes Man to Fluke. Granted, there is a hint that there is more to him than that as he does seem to actually view Fluke as a friend but again, there isn't a whole lot to him.

Song

It's a fun number that doesn't do a whole lot for the story as it's a more celebratory number that is enjoyable during the time that you listen to it but out of the songs from Sofia's catalog,  it's not the most memorable one.

My Final Thoughts

Not the worst episode in the series but there isn't a whole lot that makes this one stand out to me.   It was enjoyable to go back to but I don't see a reason to revisit it anytime soon. We aren't done with Merroway Cove just yet, join me next time as I look at Return To Merroway Cove.
