Classic Shorts showcase: Casey at The Bat

Yes, this week's short was good. It actually made me laugh. Oh I'm sorry, this week on Classic Shorts Showcase, I'll be taking a look at Casey at The Bat.

The Plot

In this short, we follow Casey who plays for the Mudville baseball team and everyone adores him especially Casey as he thinks he is the best and that he cannot make a mistake when it comes to  baseball. With this short however we soon learn that is not the case.

Narration

Narrator -  Jerry Colonna

The narration for this  short was perfect. It actually made me feel as though I was listening to a radio announcer going over the highlights of a baseball game from the '40s. He truly put his all into it and this narration is tight up there with any of Sterling Holloway's narration.  Jerry Colonna's narration was certainly one of the highlights of  this short with how much he put into it.

Main Character

I'll only be focusing on Casey as he is the most important character.

Casey - Not Voiced

Oh, Casey.  You were such a funny character who had a bit of an ego problem.  That is the major flaw of Casey he has an ego that is too big for his own good because everyone admires him and thinks he can do no wrong.  In many ways, Casey's ego reminded of Gaston but unlike Gaston, Casey had no development but that worked because it made his downfall so much funnier.  When Casey went up to bat, the first two times, he didn't even try and by the time the short got to the third ball, it pulled a cutaway gag. I was bit confused by this because it cutaway and showed birds singing and children playing but when it went back to Casey. Everyone had left the ballpark and it was raining and there was poor Casey still trying to hit the ball but to no avail.  The change in weather can be used to repseresnt Casey's attitude when he is up to bat,  and thinks he has it, the sun is shining and everything is going his way but when we see Casey didn't hit, it is raining and this is used to show the sadness that Casey is feeling about not achieving his goal. When I saw Casey still trying to hit the ball I just busted out into a fit of laughter and after Ben and Me, I needed that.

My Final Thoughts

This was just the short I needed after Ben and Me. It was funny, the narration was perfect. Casey was intentionally a jerk which made it easier to laugh at him and his downfall was one of the funniest things that I have seen during any Disney short.  Even if your aren't a fan of baseball such as myself,  you can get a laugh out of this short. I'd say that this short is a home run.    Join me next time when I take a look at...

Top 6 Non Speaking Characters

Now if there is one thing that always amazes me is when a character can deliver a wonderful performance without any true dialogue.  Sometimes, these characters deliver the best performance and outshine the speaking characters.  Disney has quite a many characters in this vein and today, I'll be counting down my Top 6

6. Perry - Phineas and Ferb

Now I like Perry as he is my favorite character from Phineas and Ferb.  He is a great example of a character who doesn't speak but delivers some of the funniest moments from the show.  He is a very engaging character and personally the Agent P and Dr. D stuff is perhaps my favorite part of the show.

5.  Wall-E - Wall-E

Truth be told, when I first saw the trailers for Wall-E, I wanted to go into this movie not liking it because it looked so vastly different than anything Pixar had ever done before.  But it turned out, I just didn't understand what direction they were going and surprisingly, this little robot charmed his way into my heart.  The only word he ever says is his name but  his curiosity of life just shines through brightly and I think one of the best examples would be his eyes because his eyes I think are where his curiosity  really comes through the best as you can see and feel how big they get. Also when he falls in love with Eve, no words are needed, his body language and the way he acts around her explains it better than any words ever could.

4. Tinkerbell - Peter Pan

Now there is no way that I could do a Top like this and not talk about Tinkerbell.  Tinkerbell is probably one of the most prime examples of a non speaking character that is endearing and has a large fan base.  Now if I had to choose a word to describe Tink, that word would be sassy.  Sassy and she has quite a bit of an attitude. This is greatly seen in the way that she places her arms on her hips showing that she is angry.  Also when she is happy such as in this picture, you can feel that.

3.  Herbie - The Love Bug

Now I have already gone over Herbie in my Love Bug review in the past and in essence, he is just a child. Unlike the other characters that I have listed so far, Herbie doesn't have a face to make any real facial expressions.  Still, as I said when he was sad, I felt sad and when he was happy, I was happy.  Granted, he did make honking sounds but that wasn't speaking.  It worked in his favor as it truly felt as though that honking was Herbie crying. When you feel a car is crying, the movie has done something right with this character.

2. Carpet - Aladdin

Carpet just like Herbie, is another character that has no face yet I found him to be one of the most endearing characters from the film he was in. Even if he was used as a mode of transportation by the other characters. One of the most prominent moments that sticks out in my mind has to be when Aladdin and Abu first enter the Cave of Wonders.  You can see Carpet hiding and just through the movement and the way the character is presented you can see in that moment, Carpet is shy.  Again, Carpet portrays shyness and it is easy to pick up on without any verbal clues.

1. Dumbo - Dumbo

Now like my # 1 choice could be anyone else. As you all know, Dumbo is my favorite movie.  Dumbo is perhaps one of the most prime examples of a non speaking character that conveys emotions perfectly.  Though I will say that I think it was a bit more sensible for this film as Dumbo was just a baby. And babies aren't able to talk when they first come into this world.  Like with Herbie when I see Dumbo happy, I have the biggest grin on my face but whenever I see him sad, I just start to bawl and cry.  I feel so bad whenever he is crying that I want to go and give Dumbo a gig old hug and tell him everything will be all right.  Fortunately, I can give Dumbo a big old hug now because of this cute little guy.

Of course, if you read my Disney Stuffed Animals article, you know what I said about this stuffed animal already.  So we end, another Top 6 and I hope you have enjoyed this countdown and tell me, who are some other characters that you think would work for this list?

No Fancy Title Reviews/A Look at Disney: Old Dogs

Introduction: Hey guys,  check out this nice little tribute review to A Look at Disney where writizblok,  author of No Fancy Title Reviews reviewed Old Dogs as I said I'll never review it but now there is a review of it on A Look at Disney.

Hello, I’m Jeff, also known as writrzblok on the TGWTG blogs section. I write “No Fancy Title Reviews” and I am actually going to be writing this installment of “A Look At Disney.” The reason for this is because in his 200th blog post, Moviefan12 said he would never review “Old Dogs,” calling it the worst live action Disney movie ever made and couldn’t sit through it whatsoever. So, I asked him if I could review it on his behalf. After watching it, (twice) I find myself reminded of the old saying, “No good deed goes unpunished.” This is my review of “Old Dogs.”

Plot
The movie centers around Dan Rayburn and Charlie Reed played by Robin Williams and John Travolta, respectively. They have been best friends since they were kids, as the song “You were a friend to me” by Bryan Adams illustrates to anvilicious ad nauseam. Vicki (played by Kelly Preston, Travolta’s real life wife), an old flame of Dan’s, has re-entered his life...only to tell him that he has seven year old fraternal twin children and that she is going to jail for two weeks and through hijinks and implausible plot convenience magic, Dan and Charlie have to watch the kids for two weeks and close a sports marketing deal that could make their careers at the same time.
This story depends on everything going wrong at just the right time. It also depends on gay jokes, race jokes and sheer idiocy on the parts of bit characters like Dax Shepard, Luis Guzman, Justin Long and Matt Dillon. The problem with the plot is that Vicki says she has no one else to watch the kids while she’s gone. Really? You have no one? You don’t have parents who’d love to see their grandkids? Adult family members like brothers/sisters/cousins/aunts/uncles etc? Same goes for Dan, he just found out he’s a dad; he couldn’t call in a brother or sister? Given his age, his parents being dead I could buy but Vicki looks to be in her late thirties. The chances of her parents being dead are unlikely. Not that it’s ever brought up. They don’t get to talk about themselves or have any kind of rapport before the plot kicks into gear.
Also, Vicki waits until seven years have passed to tell Dan he has kids? I mean, that’s a pretty significant detail that a man would like to know! I mean, granted the timing was wrong for a relationship but they could’ve worked something out. They could’ve talked! Was the break up between them that bad? If it was, why in God’s name are they hung up on each other after only one night of alcohol fueled passion?
Not to mention: alcohol, tattoos, sex, and bestiality. You know, “For kids!” Stay Classy, movie.

The Characters
Dan Rayburn (Robin Williams)
Dan is a worrywart. He had recently been bitterly divorced by his wife and on a trip to south beach, met and married Vicki and then had gotten annulled from her the very next day. Apparently, he had never gotten over Vicki completely and is thrilled when she re-enters his life. Then when she introduces him to his kids, things get complicated. His relationship with Charlie is one of the story’s main focal points as despite their differing personalities, they are loyal to each other often to their own detriment.
That being said, Robin Williams sleepwalks through this role whenever he isn’t mugging for the camera during the comedic bits. The scene in a tanning salon where he appears half nude and shaven like an Olympic swimmer is cringe worthy at best and is meant to set up a running brick joke about a chest tattoo he got during a trip to Miami. The scene in which he suffers from poor depth perception and dry mouth during a golf game is excruciatingly long as well as a chore to sit through. His acting with the kids is clichéd sap from beginning to end. There is also a character arc in which Dan is awkward around kids and a bit of a bumbler. It’s supposed to be charming but in a one scene where he stands in the stall while his son uses the bathroom, it becomes apparent that there is a fine line between being awkward, and being one step away from a Dateline exclusive. At that point, it isn’t awkward, it’s stupid.

Charlie Reed (John Travolta)
Charlie is the Lewis to Robin Williams’s Martin (and yes, I am ashamed I referenced a much funnier duo, thank you). Charlie is a ladies’ man; the jokester with a more outgoing personality than Dan’s. He hits up women in nearly every scene he’s in. Charlie is incredibly focused on the job but is also sympathetic to Dan’s plight and, despite very vocal reservations; helps provide Dan and the kids with a place to stay.
Travolta, despite the good chemistry with Williams, behaves like a manchild in this movie with his collector’s items, posh bachelor pad and laissez-faire attitude to life. At times, when complaining about the situation with the kids makes him seem like an insensitive jerk. There is a small subplot with an interpreter for a Japanese businessman played by Lori Laughlin, but it barely gets any screen time and the wrap up is as meaningless as it is contrived.

Supporting Character
Craig White (Seth Green)
Craig is the junior executive assistant to Dan and Charlie. Young, eager but a bit spacey at times, Craig is there to help his bosses out with the kids when the situation demands.
The character of Craig is completely unnecessary for the simple fact that he is comic relief. That wouldn’t be a problem in and of itself but this is a comedy. You know what that means, right? This movie felt it needed cathartic laughter to relieve the tension in their comedy! And it fails spectacularly. Every time he shares the screen with Travolta and Williams, Green is completely out-acted and overshadowed by the two stronger presences.

Vicki Greer (Kelly Preston)
The catalyst for the movie’s plot, Vicki is Dan’s old flame from a drunken marriage and annulment in Miami. Vicki is going to prison because she chained herself to the doors of a chemical plant in a bout of environmental activism. It’s this (and Dan incapacitating the one friend she apparently has) that kick starts the movie’s plot.
Kelly Preston is here to look good for the cameras and react to Robin Williams’ character’s lines. It isn’t that she does a bad job; she just isn’t given very much to do. Every scene she has except for the plot reveal is reactionary. She reacts to Dan taking the kids, she reacts to Dan taking a job to Japan, she reacts to Dan saying he was a fool to leave them, etc;
Positives
The children (Conner Rayburn and Ella Bleu Travolta) pretty much deliver the best performances because they’re essentially being themselves. They’re just kids and they do what kids do. One of the more refreshing things about this movie is that these are not bad kids. They aren’t the stereotypical spoiled mad-geniuses who actively torment their parents or other adults for their own sadistic pleasure. For instance, the scene where the kids switch up Dan and Charlie’s medication is caused by a simple accident. It’s a good thirty second bit because it’s little kids being little kids, instead of little Joseph Mengeles.
Another decent part of this movie and I’m sad to say this is Bernie Mac. He played Jimmy Lunchbox, a children’s entertainer. He’s only in it briefly but he does pretty well. Unfortunately, this movie would be his last after his untimely death in 2008. Justin Long and Matt Dillon ham it up as camp counselors and provide some of the more chuckle-worthy lines in this film but genuine funny moments in this movie is like walking halfway through the Sahara Desert and finding a glass of water at the half-way point.

Final Thoughts
This movie was abominable. The story was horribly predictable with plot holes you could fly The Yamato from Space Battleship Yamato through. I’m serious, I knew where the story would go from point to point and all I was doing was counting the minutes in between story beats. The acting from the main cast is lackluster except from the kids but then again, I’m not even sure how much of their work was acting. This truly is the worst live-action movie from Disney I’ve seen to date.

A special thanks to Moviefan12 for letting me put this together.

Top 6 Posts of A Look at Disney 2.0

This past Saturday, I posted my 200th article.  Go figure that my 200th article is one of my few negative reviews.  Since my 100th article, there a lot of great articles to come along and hold a special place in my heart.  Today I'm counting down my Top 6 Posts since the 100th Blog. Which means they have mostly come after that blog. Let's begin.

6.  All of My Cross Overs

Okay so I'm cheating here a little bit seeing as my first cross over took place before the 100th blog but I had a blast working with each individual that I worked with. From counting down the Top 6 Leading Ladies of Disney or debunking Disney Rumors with Manic_Expression.  It was a blast to work with all of them and I feel that really culminated in Music Fridays # 20 with that being my biggest cross over ever.  I had so much fun and it was an honor to have them on A Look at Disney.

5. Automobile Month: The Love Bug

Ah, yes the article that closed out Automobile Month. My first and so far only review of a live action film.  To you this review may not seem like a big deal but I  was always scared of trying to review a live action film. As I felt my reviewing style wouldn't translate but I knew with doing Automobile Month, that I had to try and tackle this film. The original plan was to review the classic 4. Though I felt that would have dragged out Automobile Month more than I wanted to.  Though while I was surprised at well, this one turned out. Some of you reassured me that I did a fine job reviewing this film and that has given me the confidence to review more live action films.

This was perhaps the most unique Music Fridays that I have ever done.  Where I looked at AMV's that used songs from RENT set to  clips of Disney films.  I had a lot of fund with this one and it was just an honor to take part in Arthur Knowledge's collab to spread the word about LGBT teens and the hardships that they face.  When Arthur first announced this, I knew that this is exactly what I wanted to do. I had this article written on the night that Arthur announced his collab. That's how much I wanted to do this article and Arthur announced this collab on April 26th and this didn't go up until July 8th. So it sat for a while but I was just so pumped to get this done.

With this post, I got a bit more personal when I talked about all of my favorite Disney stuffed animals and what they all mean to me.  I also talked about how I found them and how it long it took to find them and why Mickey (making his 4th appearance)  means so much to me as he is like my safety blanket.  As I just feel safe with him around.

To this day, this will be my favorite review.  I feel that I perfectly covered everything from the characters to the music. Though this review took me the longest to write as I spent 2 weeks working on it. I spent 2 weeks working on it because I wanted it to be perfect and I felt so much pressure to get it  just right with this review.  Personally, my favorite part of this review was talking about Gaston and how he changed throughout the film. Honestly,  I feel that this quote  from LittleMissFoolish summarizes how I feel about this review.

You really managed to do this movie justice. I loved this review! I didn't think it was possible, to give every single element of this movie the time in the limelight it deserved, but you did it.

This article almost didn't happen because of how personal I was in this article with talking about my epilepsy.  I was worried that this article would be ill received but I was wrong and all of the comments were highly respectable. I thank you for that as this article wasn't easy to write.  I had the idea of this article in my head for a while but I didn't know how to approach the subject with it being so personal.  Though I thought using Stitch was a great jumping off point and I felt it was just handled well.  There could be no other article in the this slot because of how much this one means to me as I was putting it all out there.

I hope you have enjoyed this look at what I consider my Top 6 Posts since my 100th blog.  Now your favorite may not have made the list and if not what post sticks out to you. Tell me in the comments.

Mus Fridays # 21: Firehouse Five Plus Two

The Firehouse Five Plus Two was a Dixieland Jazz band that consisted of many people from the Walt Disney Studios Animation Department.  From what I understand, the band started out as a way for the guys to blow off steam but as seen here, they released some records as Walt loved what they were doing.  They were even featured in some the Disney television specials and episodes of the Mickey Mouse Club.  If you have seen The Princess and The Frog, there is a rather quick homage to them in Tiana's restaurant as the band is named The Firefly Five Plus Lou. The great thing about these guys is that while they made their music, they still worked on their other craft of animation and never let the music get in the way. But today, we focus on the music. So join me as we take a trip back to simpler times and take a listen to the Firehouse Five Plus Two.

Firehouse Stomp

Our first song is titled the Firehouse Stomp.  I feel that this set really shows their talent as musicians. They are just having a good ol' time playing together and it shows in their music. Here everyone gets a chance to shine. I also really love the inclusion of the firehouse bell as that adds another layer of fun.  The beat of this tune is very catchy and while it does speed at times, I actually like that.  As I feel that it works in this song's favor.

JA-DA

This song is from their album, Firehouse Five Plus Two At Disneyland and I tihnk this is a bit more fun than the first song. I don't know what it is about this song that I like over Firehouse Stomp but I think that it has to be the inclusion of words into this song as it allows the band to showcase their vocal talents as well. Those are just some funny words and this is just a fun song again.  I can actually picture myself on the Port Orleans Resort at Disney World listening to this.  It is quite relaxing in an odd way.

Minnie The Mermaid

Okay, I just love the opening of this song and it sounds like they are splashing in water.  Though that can't be very good for their intrustments.  Admittedly I don't think their singing is as strong here as it is in the previous song and while this deals with sea-life, the sounds gives me more of a carnival vibe. Though perhaps this could work on something such as pier because are usually close to water.  Again it is a fun little ditty and it is easy to get into and I love how it all ends with it sounding as though they are soaked.

Brass Bell

Our last number is titled Brass Bell and just as with the Firehouse Stomp, it takes place at a firehouse.  This song compared to the rest has a simpler sound to it and it doesn't sound as busy. Again just like all the other numbers it is a fun listen and while it does speed up, it sounds softer than the other songs.  While not the weakest song featured something just feels lacking. I don't know what it is but it feels as though something is missing. All in all it is a good song though and it certainly showcases the zaniness of this band.

I hope you have enjoyed this rather special Music Fridays that has highlighted a part of Disney history that not many people know about.   You can find many more songs by this band on YouTube and I suggest that you give them a listen.  Honestly, these are my favorite types of Music Fridays where I get to showcase music from oft-forgotten parts of Disney.   Join me next week when I take a look at songs that already have a life before being used in a Disney song as I take a look at Already Established Songs Used In Disney Films.

Can We Talk about High School Musical: Get In The Picture

Welcome to a  Can We Talk about that is a bit different from previous ones in that it is more of review. Though this isn't my normal review style Therefore I have decided to make this a Can We Talk about. As I have confessed in the past, I genuinely enjoy the High School Musical trilogy. I enjoyed the characters and the music. As some of you may know I also enjoy competition based reality shows such as Survivor or as a better example for this article, America's Got Talent.  I'm not into stuff like The Real World or Jersey Shore (The show that gives reality shows a bad rap).  Anyways getting back on topic, you may be wondering why I'm bringing this up. Well some of you may or not know this but in the summer of 2008, a reality show based around High School Musical aired on ABC.  I was intrigued by this idea not because I like reality shows and High School Musical. I was intrigued by it because I didn't think it would work and I was sadly proven correct.

I honestly thought it was dumb idea to try and take something such as High School Musical and turn it into a reality show.  Many other fictional TV shows were given the reality show treatment. However there is one in particular that I wish to reference  for this article as it was very similar to High School Musical: Get In The Picture. That show is....

As you may recall in Music Fridays # 11, I confessed to being a Gleek.  When I first learned of The Glee Project, my mind went back to thinking of the failure that was High School Musical: Get In The Picture. Surprisingly, though The Glee Project acted as though they knew what to do.  While Get In The Picture didn't have a clue as to how a reality show was supposed to work. For starters, The Glee Project while it didn't necessarily have a host, the main mentors were people that were involved with Glee. While on Get In The Picture, the host was none other than Nick Lachey.  Now I don't know what they were going for when hiring him as the host other than I guess he's popular.

Quite honestly, my feeling about Nick Lachey taking part in this can be summed with this saying. "Stay out of it, Nick Lachey".    Seriously,  the show couldn't think of getting one of the cast members such as Ashley Tisdale or Corbin Bleu to host.  I have nothing against Nick personally but I feel that this show would have had a better connection to the movies had they gotten someone that was involved with the movies to host.

Also I may be incorrect here but I barely recall Kenny Ortega appearing on this show. For those of you that don't know, Ortega directed the three HSM films and one would think given how involved he is with High School Musical would like to appear on the show. Well, I think he appeared on the finale but that was it.

Whereas Ryan Murphy, the creator of Glee not only appeared on every episode of The Glee Project.  He was also involved in the determination for elimination. Which brings me to another problem I had with this show.  They had the worst elimination process that I had ever seen on a reality show.  On most reality shows after someone is eliminated they are no longer on the show. Oh no, not this one. They just became part of the chorus. Which is a nice way of saying that were just back up singers for the finalists during the finale.  I mean I would be okay with that except for the fact that I feel as though they mistreated the elimination process by allowing the eliminated contestants to still appear on the show. Really, I find that almost embarrassing. I mean you are, you were competing to be a part of the  High School Musical family.  Your told that you've been cut but you get to stay until we get down to the finalists and you'll be performing backup  for them.  I'd rather go home than watch someone else go after the dream I wanted. I mean I may sound a bit jaded but c'mon once your off the show, your off the show.   I would have been okay with this had they done the chorus deal as some type of online web series like what Survivor does after contestants are voted off and become part of the jury.

Perhaps the biggest insult of this show was the grand prize. Honestly the grand prize wasn't even worth competing for in my opinion. All the winner got was a chance to record a music video that would be during the credits of High Musical 3. Nice, you have a winner but no one is going to see there work because not many people who actually watch High School  Musical will watch the credits.  Again this is where The Glee Project was smart and actually gave thought into their prize.  The winner or I should say winners since more than one person won that show get to appear on Glee.  The two winners that tied get a 7 episode guest spot while the two runners up get a 2 episode guest spot.  I ask you, which is the better prize?   I'd say the guest spot.

Now I won't complain too much about it airing on ABC even though personally, I feel that this show should have been shown on Disney Channel.  I understand why they were going for ABC because with ABC they probably thought they could bring in more viewers and also The Glee Project didn't air on Fox but rather Oxygen Network. I don't know why it aired on that channel. Well the show did do one thing right in that they filmed in the same high school that was used for High School Musical.

That was probably the only thing that they did right.  With filming in the high school that was used as East High in the HSM trilogy, the show had a sliver of a connection to these films.  Honestly that was one of the few things done right on this wannabe reality show.

I think you can all figure out that I consider this the worst thing attached to the High School Musical franchise. Perhaps I'm just a fan who is  jaded and felt betrayed by what they did Now while The Glee Project may just ended, and it has yet to be seen how well the contestants will work on Glee. That show had a better handle on to A. to do a reality show and B.  actually care about it's fans.  That is one of the biggest problems that I had with this show.  It felt as though they didn't care about the large fanbase that HSM had. Now I may come across as dork and a loser but as stated I'm a fan of High School Musical and  that is one of the reasons this show angered me so much. This show was just one big mess and didn't even try to connect itself to High School Musical other than using it in the title and being shot in the same high school.  If they had just tried harder, this show would not have been so bad.   It just saddens me that one of  Disney's earliest forays in reality television was such a complete and utter failure.  Is it the worst reality show that I have watched? No,  that would be any of the countless love competition shows on VH1  but I still count it amongst one of the weaker reality shows that has ever been produced.  If a little more effort had been put into the show, it could have been better.

The Evil Manta (The Little Mermaid Episode Review)

Join me as we go Under The Sea again as I take a look at an episode of  The Little Mermaid TV show. First up the episode title.

Episode Title

The Evil Manta

Simple enough title and it refers to the villain of this episode.  Makes sense to use this as the title since this was his first appearance in the show.

The Plot

The plot is a bit simple in that Ariel is tricked into freeing The Evil Manta from a volcano when she think he is a small and helpless creature. However that is not the case as we soon learn that he is a giant monster filled with hate and rage.

Characters

Per standard form, this will be broken down into Main Characters and Villain.  I'm not going to cover supporting characters because there really weren't any.

Main Characters

Ariel voiced by Jodi Benson

As stated, Ariel let The Evil Manta free by accident.  So she had to try and set everything right after Manta turned everyone in Altantica against each other using hateful gossip and saying mean things about the inhabitants.   For the most part Ariel was her usual self although there were some moments when it seemed as though she was overwhelmed as to what to do.  That makes sense somewhat as Triton wasn't there. Though we know Ariel has sisters, so why didn't she go to one of her sisters to try and get them to help her out? Granted, the sisters didn't appear the main stories of the shows that much from what I recall. Still, that would have been the next logical step.  Though I will give Ariel credit for trying and fix this herself. But this is a daunting task for a 15 year old girl to take on.  Trying to restore peace in a land all by herself  almost seems impossible but of course in the end, Ariel pulled it off.

Flounder voiced by Edan Gross

Admittedly, Ariel did have some help in the form of Flounder. Though I'm not exactly sure that I want Flounder to be the one helping me in crisis like this. Because he gets scared pretty easily. Although to his credit, he does trick Manta pretty well when Manta tries to persuade Flounder not to like Ariel anymore. He just pretends to go along with it. That was a nice touch. There was a nice moment in the episode where there was a flashback to when Ariel and Flounder first met.  Apparently Flounder is less of a guppy here then he was when he first met Ariel. I'm assuming through his friendship with Ariel, he learned to be somewhat brave.

Music

In Harmony

As with many many shows and especially this show, it liked to include music.  This song is actually a bit cheesy. It's all right for a children's show but I don't know it just feels lackluster. Granted, one shouldn't compare this song to the lovely soundtrack of the film as these are two different fields.   Even in this regard,  for a TV show song I do not find this song to be very memorable.  Honestly, this is a song that as soon I hear it, I'll probably forget it.  In all honesty, it was a bit of a bore. Though do keep a lookout for a Hidden Mickey.

Villain

The Evil Manta voiced by Tim Curry

Now we come to the villain of this episode, The Evil Manta.  Now don't expect any Rocky Horror jokes just because Tim  Curry voiced this character.  Tim Curry certainly gave the character a unique voice at first then it just got tiresome as it sounded like any other stock bad guy voice. Also  for a debut episode, he sure doesn't do a lot.  I mean sure after Ariel frees him from the volcano, he starts spreading the gossip and hateful rumors. After that he just stops and sits on top of the castle.  I found myself saying "C'mon do something! Please do something!"   Also his defeat was a bit weak as he was driven out of Altantica with music. Which you have seen if you watched the video included in this review.   I found that to be a bit disappointing that for a debut episode of a villain, he only takes action during the first act of the episode.  In some ways, you could have replaced this character with anyone else doing the same thing and it would be the same exact episode. While Manta would go on to appear in later episodes of the series, I felt that he had a weak debut episode.

My Final Thoughts

While not the best or strongest episode in the series' library. It was decent, granted parts of it felt clustered such as when Ariel was trying to gather all the fish to explain what Manta was doing to them. The Flashback to when Ariel and Flounder first met was a nice touch.  Overall, the big problem with this episode was that I don't think the show knew how to use The Evil Manta yet and that is why we barely saw him. Which I consider a downfall when this is not only this villain's debut episode but his name is the title of the episode too. I was expecting to see more of him with the title this episode had.  To this episode's credit however, it never felt girly and trust me there were some episodes of this show that could feel really girly.   I would compare this episode to a newer cartoon that has taken the internet by storm, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.  Disregarding my lack of interest in that show, MLP has proven that you can have a show that while based on a girl property both  sexes can enjoy and I feel that is true of this episode and many other in  The Little Mermaid TV series as well. Of course, I may be saying just because The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite Disney movies.  This with many other of the older Disney TV shows such as Aladdin prove that you can tell a new story with these characters without screwing them over like the horrid sequels did.   Oh before I forget I want thank DisneyOtoko  their Mermaid Month which you guys should take the time to check out inspired me to go Under The Sea one more time to revisit Ariel and her friends.

I'm Taking The Disney Magic To Reviewers Unknown

That's right A Look at Disney will now have a home on Reviewers Unknown.  Now I can't tell you when I'll be debuting there but never fret I will still post on TGWTG.  This is a big honor to be picked up by this site.  Writing these articles has meant a lot to me especially with you guys. Seriously, I'd like to thank everyone who has taken the time to read one of my articles.  James, you already know that I think of you like a mentor.  Dawn_Heart, BigBlackHatMan, you guys are some  of  the nicest people that I have ever talked to. Positive Troll, you are a great supporter not just to me but to all bloggers. Patrick_O, Gomu69, it was a pleasure to work with you guys.

Now two questions remain. First how should I get myself over to Reviewers Unknown? Oh oh, I know I'll use Dumbo.

No that would never work because someone would complain about animal abuse. Well I could always ask Tinkerbell for Pixie Dust.

Though I last heard, she's running pretty low. I could always ask Aladdin to borrow Carpet

Of course he could be using it to show Jasmine "A Whole New World" Again   Or I could always just go the simple route and just use the site's URL   http://www.reviewersunknown.com/

But where's the fun in that. Well you'll just have to take a look as there a lot of great people on the site such as  Arthur Knowledge, Ozzie Arcane, TestZero,  The Blockbuster Chick, Detroitmetworks,  The Cartoon Hero, The Hardcore Kid  and many more.   Seriously, if you haven't take the time to watch any of these fine people before. Please do so because will disappoint. Also take a listen to their podcast, Save It For The Podcast. I'll even provide a link to my favorite episode of Save It For The Podcast for you guys to check out.

Now I do apologize if I didn't mention you directly but do know that if you have read or commented on one of my articles, you mean something to A Look at Disney.  Honestly, I haven't felt this good since my My 100th Blog.

Now for the next thing, I don't know what article to start with. Though I am leaning towards my Beauty and The Beast review as I feel it is my strongest. If you guys have any personal favorites that would be great to start with on that site, please let me know.  Though as of right now let's stay away from Music Fridays and Classic Shorts Showcase.  Just focus on the regular articles.  Again, I hope any of you guy stop on by Reviewers Unknown to check the wonderful talent there.

By now if you know me, you should know that I like celebrating with music and well I don't see a song more fitting than this one for this occasion.

You know I think this picture sums what I'm trying to say.

I mean it and I know that this may have been a bit sappy but really would you expect anything different from me?

Classic Shorts Showcase: Ben and Me

Welcome to another edition of Class Shorts Showcase as today, I will be taking a look at the short, Ben and Me.

The Plot

The plot of this short is rather simple as we follow the life of American Icon, Benjamin Franklin through his life and take a look at  all the things he did during his lifetime but from this short we learn that he had some help in the form of a mouse.

Narration

Narrator - Sterling Holloway

Ah, Mr. Holloway we meet again.  Now this was rather interesting because unlike all the other shorts that I have reviewed, the narration was done both in character as Sterling Holloway played the lead character of this and therefore it was also done in first person.  I actually liked this and I thought that this was unique take on doing the narration and it was nice to have something different and also I feel by having the narration be done in character, it gave the audience more insight into the thoughts of the main character.

Characters

Amos voiced by Sterling Holloway

As stated, the narration was done in character and well here is that character. Amos is poor church mouse who left home to make life easier on his parents and he couldn't a place to stay until he came upon Benjamin Franklin's old shop. And according to this short Amos is the uncredited inventor of such things as bifocal glasses and he is also the one who convinced Benjamin Franklin to print The Pennsylvania Gazette. As for the character of Amos, he was likable for the most part. He was a fun little character who I could tell just wanted to see Ben succeed. Though sometimes he didn't care for Ben's actions such as according tho this Amos was in a little basket on the kite that Benjamin Franklin used to discover electricity.   Normally these types of shorts or stories where a fictional character doesn't bug me as I enjoyed Johnny Appleseed and that had Johnny's Angel helping him but as much as I liked Amos, I found him to be a bit stubborn and I will say that he was the one character that I found likable but I just couldn't enjoy this short. Though it wasn't because of this character.

Benjamin Franklin voiced by Charles Ruggles

Now we come to Benjamin Franklin. I hate the way he was portrayed in this short.  Honestly in this short it felt as though he couldn't anything without the aid of Amos by his side and worse yet as I mention when talking about Amos with the kite that to me made Ben look like an insensitive jerk that didn't care much about his friends.  Now I may recall much from my American History but I don't think that is the way it really was.  I swear I had the hardest time sitting through this short because of the way they made Benjamin Franklin an insensitive buffoon.   Y'know if his character wasn't based on a real historical figure this probably wouldn't bug me so much but I feel as though they treating this person poorly.  Now don't get me wrong there was at least one moment where I felt pity for this character and that was after he came back from talking to the King of England and had to report the sad news to the local townspeople that nothing could be done at the time with the crisis they were in but other than that I couldn't stand this character and I'm surprised Amos didn't leave him sooner because the kite incident wasn't the first time he pulled a trick on Amos. Oh no early on he put his thumb on Amos' tail after working on one of his inventions and he had static on it and fried poor Amos' tail.  Amos and Ben shook on this and agreed that Ben would never do anything like that again but what Amos didn't see that the audience saw was that Ben had his fingers crossed behind his back. It was at that moment I just went  "Really!?"   There may not have been an actual villain in this short but this Benjamin Franklin sure came close.

My Final Thoughts

I personally would say skip this short but if your interested in somewhat, go ahead and check it out.  I j don't think it is very good as I feel it messes with an American Historical figure.  I find  the only good thing about this short to be Sterling Holloway but I have come to expect that with each of his performances. I hate saying this but I actually think this is so fat my least favorite Disney short that I have watched and reviewed since starting Classic Shorts Showcase. While I may have disliked the short, I can't rightfully call it bad because the voice acting was decent and the animation was up to Disney standards.  I just found the character of Benjamin Franklin to be very unlikable. I don't like doing negative reviews  and I promise that these will be rare. Also please keep in mind for most of the shorts that I review on Classic Shorts Showcase,  I haven't watched most of these shorts and know very little about the plot of these shorts. So I do try and go in with a fresh and open mind. Now  again, even though I may not have cared for it doesn't mean that you won't. These are just my opinions and you may think differently.  Join me next time as we batter up as I take a look at Casey at The Bat

Top 6 Sterling Holloway Performances

Sterling Holloway should be a name that your familiar with, if you have read any of my articles as he has been mentioned quite a few times because he worked with Disney in quite a few of their and animated shorts and even voiced characters for their films. Join me today as I countdown the Top 6 Sterling Holloway Performances.  Just a note, narrations do count for this Top 6.

6.  Adult Flower -Bambi

Now Flower is one of my favorite characters in Bambi and and when he ages,  Sterling Holloway takes over voicing him and Sterling does a good job of catching the spirit and nature of Flower. Though it may be unfair to only put is role of adult Flower at number 6, only because the child voice of Flower is more memorable. Now Sterling does a great job but I don't know about you guys but when I think of the characters of Bambi, I tend to think of their children incarnations.

5. Kaa - The Jungle Book

One of the few villains on this list and while you can still hear a little bit of Sterling Holloway's most famous character in this character,  the voicing here is  quite twisted and while Kaa may not be a true villain, he still counts as evil and Kaa is one of the comic relief characters and Mr. Holloway's voice works well for comedy and plus Sterling Holloway sings one heck of a great song from this film.

4.His narration for Susie The Little Blue Coupe

Now as most of you know, I feel that narration can make or break a short. This short is no exception to that rule and sterling Holloway's  narration shines through in this short. As I said in my review of Susie, when Sterling is heard, you can feel the excitement and emotion in his voice as though he actually cares for Susie and as though he wants to protect her and just see her survive.

3. The Cheshire Cat  - Alice In Wonderland

Now this is most certainly one of Sterling Holloway's most unique roles, if you ask me.  I think this role is where he perhaps shows some of his best range with voice acting because out of all the characters he voices, this one sounds the least like any of his other voice work.  Also where I said Kaa was somewhat twisted, The Cheshire Cat is full out twisted and loves playing mind games with people and that comes through quite well with Sterling Holloway's delivery.  This is one of his most fun roles to date. The voice of this character matches the grin quite well.

2. Mr. Stork - Dumbo

Now, Mr. Stork may not be in Dumbo all that much but I find him to be one of the many highlights of my favorite film. I honestly think his singing telegram when delivering Dumbo to Mrs. Jumbo is very funny and light-hearted in nature but that is why it works.

1. Winnie The Pooh - The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh

Now my number one choice may seem a bit obvious but it just felt right that Winnie The Pooh be number 1.  First of all, Sterling Holloway was the very first person to voice the lovable old bear and while I like Jim Cummings and he does a fantastic Tigger,  no one can match the greatness of Sterling Holloway voicing Pooh Bear.  It just feels so right and  I know in one of my past reviews, I said that I found his narration to be a bit of a problem because he sounded too much like Pooh Bear. In some regards, I actually think that shows how tied Sterling Holloway is with character when I think of Pooh when I see his name or his voice. There is just something very charming about the he voiced Pooh Bear.  Now I would like to end with one of my favorite Pooh Bear songs that I haven't talked about before.

I hope you have enjoyed this Top 6 that took a look at some of the great characters that were brought to life by a very talented man.
