Hello & welcome back. Today, we continue Mater Mondays as we take a look at Unidentified Flying Mater and if you couldn't tell by the title, this one deals with UFO's. To be more precise, one UFO and in this world, UFO's are treated as aliens would be treated in the human world albeit this one is friendly and in some ways makes me think of E.T.
The Plot
This short opens when we see a hubcap fly out of Luigi's Casa Della Tires and Mater thinks that it's a UFO and Mater goes on to tell McQueen about the time he met a UFO, who he names Mator as that is the first thing he says after meeting Mater, well that and dadgum. The beginning of this short is really cute as we watch Mater and Mator interact with one another. Oh, with this being an alien story, they do the take me to your leader shtick, where Mater asks Mator if he wants to see his leader or so that's what you think. We cut away to Mater showing Mator all of his liters. Sure, a simple little joke but I find it cute. Oh, at one point Mater takes Mator tractor tipping and Mator ends up creating a crop circle. I found that rather humorous. Later on Mator is found out about by the government and taken to Parking Area 51 to be examined. Mater makes it his mission to save him, which he does and yeah, McQueen shows up out of the blue and really, I won't be touching upon him in the review as he's not all that important to the story being told. Though Mater, Mator, & McQueen are rescued by Mator's mom aka the mother ship and she drops our pals back off at Radiator Springs.
That's the mother ship right there and yes, Mia & Tia do appear in this short with a different look and I'll show that right now because they are more gag character than anything else.
All in all, I thought this short had a great tale of friendship that was rather heartwarming to watch.
Characters
Mater voiced by Larry The Cable Guy
Mater unlike in the other shorts didn't feel as extreme or goofy, honestly he felt very down to earth and just excited to have a new friend in his life. It shows that Mater really likes Mator and wants to spend as much time as possible with him and he is heartbroken when the government takes him away but that doesn't stop him, he goes to great lengths to get him back. He disguises himself as a doctor and I love how this plays out as the scientists there are dumb enough to believe that Mater is actually a doctor. They probably watched Rescue Squad Mater beforehand. Though that is the wrong type of doctor, and I just love that they turn to Mater for the meaning of dadgum as they think it is some foreign word, when in reality it means nothing and it's just an expression. After Mater tells them the fake meaning, he along with Mator make a break for it. Everyone from Parking Area 51 is right on their tailgates. Sorry, sorry couldn't resist. It was a lot of fun to watch.
Mator - Voice Unlisted
Mator is just adorable. He is the true highlight of this short, he is just so cute and seeing him trying to learn about the Cars World society from Mater has to be one of the cutest things and the relationship that forms between these two characters is stunning in how this short amount of time, I was actually able to come to feel for this character and believe the friendship between Mater and Mator as being 100% genuine. As I said when he was taken, Mater was broken but he went to save his new friend and sure, he probably never saw him again but it was clear during that short time, that the bond they built was very strong. Pixar, please bring back Mator in another short, he is such an adorable character that deserves more screen time.
My Final Thoughts
This short is a must watch. Out of all the Mater shorts, this one is in my top 3 alongside Time Travel Mater and Mater Private Eye as being the best. Though I think that this short has the most heart to it and that's why I love it so much. The relationship between the characters is just so raw and believable. If you watch this short, you'll come to like Mator, the same way I did. He is the breakout character of this short and that's saying a lot for a one time character. I cannot reccomend this short enough. If you want to watch any of these shorts, this is a great one to start off with and you don't have to worry about any contintuiy issues as none of these shorts are tied to each other.
