Hello and welcome back. Today, I'll be taking a look at the very fist Holiday special from The New Adventures of Winnie The Pooh. Join me as I take a look at Winnie The Pooh and Christmas Too
The Plot
Christmas has come to the 100 Acre Wood as the special opens on our friends writing their letter to Santa with help from Christopher Robin. Tigger asks for a snowshoe for his tail so that he can bounce on the snow. Eeyore asks for an umbrella to protect him from snow and Rabbit asks for a new fly swatter as he has been having a bug problem. Then they send off the letter to Santa but Piglet comes by the next morning to inform Pooh that he forgot to ask for anything. Later that morning, they get the letter back and take it back to Rabbit's house and while being generous with each other, get over zealous and a a bit over their head as they ask for nicer and bigger things for one another as Tigger asks for two new houses for Eeyore, Eeyore asks for 3 pots of hunny for Pooh, then Tigger suggests ten and Rabbits asks for 4 snowshoes for Tigger. Rabbit, Tigger, & Eeyore send Pooh and Piglet off the send the letter back as it was actually Christmas Eve and they decide that they need a bigger tree with all of the gifts they think that they are getting, which leads to one of my favorite moments from the special.
Yep, after getting some help from Gopher, they found the perfect tree and just put a lot of mis match decorations on the tree including Eeyore as an angel ornament. There was just something about this sequence that was so funny. It was just a quick sight gag. Now back to the main plot, the letter did not make it to Santa, it instead made it's way back to Pooh. Pooh and Piglet had to try and figure a way to give their friends, the gifts they wanted. That's when they decided to fill for Santa. Okay, Pooh as Santa was just so cute. Pooh/Santa made his deliveries to the others in the forest but they were not pleased with their gifts as they were homemade and a bit faulty. Pooh/Santa gave Tigger something to bounce in on the snow but after the bounce, it broke and he gave Rabbit, a new sprayer that was really just a kettle connected to a stick. Rabbit and Tigger came across each other and then saw that the fake Santa gave Eeyore a suitcase for a house. A mobile home, if you will. They decide that they need to put a stop to this fake Santa and that's when they find out who it actually is, when they ask Santa and his reindeer (Piglet) to fly but he goes falling backwards.
Now I should also mention that Pooh was going to give that sled to Christopher Robin as that he had wanted. At the end, Pooh tells his friends why he did it and he decides to walk to the North Pole so that Santa can get the letter (I don't know where the 100 Acre Wood in terms of geography but that has to be a long walk). We see our other friends sitting under their big tree, sad that Pooh isn't there but he later returns sadly informing them that he couldn't make it but then Christopher Robin comes with a bag of presents for his friends, which contains all of the original presents they asked for at the beginning of the special. The special ends with Pooh Bear giving Christopher Robin a hug. It was just so sweet. I loved the plot for this special, it was just so adorable. Whereas Boo To You! showed it's okay to be scared and that you need to face your fears, this special shows the value of friendship and what great lengths some friends will go to for one another as examined with Pooh Bear. He wanted to make sure that his friends had the perfect Christmas and wanted to deliver on that end. Gotta give the silly old bear credit as he tried.
Characters
Now I'll be breaking this down this down into Main, & Supporting. With that out of the way, let's begin.
Main Characters
Winnie The Pooh voiced by Jim Cummings
Pooh was just so sweet in the special. He tried really hard to give his friends, the perfect Christmas and seeing Pooh Bear as Santa was such a nice touch. Now as I said in the plot, it didn't work out as the gifts, he gave his friends were a bit shoddy. Still, I gotta give the silly old bear credit for trying and plus, he actually had the courage to go down the chimney at Tigger's. This of course was after Tigger mentioned that.
It was another cute moment but really, this special had so many cute moments like these.
Piglet voiced by John Fielder
Piglet was really fun in this special too and I thought it was sweet of him to go to Pooh to tell Pooh, that he forgot to put something on the list to Santa. Funny thing is though, with all the trouble that they went through Piglet forgot to put a present on the list for himself. Also I gotta say Piglet being Santa's reindeer was rather funny and it made me think of Max from How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
Supporting Characters
Tigger voiced by Paul Winchell
Now I'll admit that our other 3 characters take a backseat to Pooh and Piglet. Although their reactions to their gifts were priceless. Tigger as I said wanted something that he could bounce on while in the snow. So Pooh/Santa gave him that barrel with the boot on the bottom. Needless to say, it doesn't work out as well as our bouncy friend would've hoped.
Rabbit voiced by Ken Sansom
Rabbit was really funny in this special with his bug problem. I had a blast watching him trying to take out the bugs. I really felt for him as I wanted to see him succeed because they kept on invading his house. There were just so many of them and they were invading his house. So, out of all the shoddy gifts given, I felt the most bad for Rabbit.
Eeyore voiced by Peter Cullen
Eeyore really got a short end of the stick with his gift. What is he supposed to do with a suitcase. Now unlike Rabbit or Tigger, we don't see his gift delivered and in a way, I think that's okay because this image alone is just too funny.
Christopher Robin voiced by Edan Gross
Christopher Robin was in this special the least out of the supporting characters but he had a minor role in that he is the one that helped in writing the letter and he brought the gifts to his friends at the end and just ended on a very sweet moment with Pooh Bear hugging him.
My Final Thoughts
This special is just adorable. It's so cute, I love it. Now I do think that Boo to You Too! is the better Pooh Bear special but this one is just as good. It is so sweet and how can you not love Pooh Bear trying to give his friends the perfect Christmas. Good on you, silly old bear. Good on you. I highly suggest this special as it is in my opinion worthy of being deemed a Christmas classic. Join me next time for a Christmas Shorts Showcase review of...
