Hello & welcome back to Sterling Holloway Spotlight. And today, we begin by taking a look at the first character, he played for Disney. Mr. Stork from Dumbo, now I did not watch all of the film just the scenes with Mr. Stork. Now, I'll freely that it will not be this way for all of these but seeing as Mr. Stork was in very little and this is only about Sterling's characters, I felt that was all I needed to view. However, there is one other piece of animation featuring this character, that I felt the need to cover. That being Lambert The Sheepish Lion. Now, here is how this will be broken down, First Appearance, talking about the character's first appearance of course, Personality, Role, what was their role in the piece(s) of animation that they were in, , Favorite Moment, a stand out moment from this character that I really love & finally, Are They Still Around? With that out of the way, let's begin.
First Appearance
Mr. Stork made his first appearance in the fourth theatrical release from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Dumbo. However as previously mentioned, this would not be the last time, Mr.Stork would reappear 11 years later in the eight minute short, Lambert The Sheepish Lion. With Holloway reprising the role.
Now it is never directly hinted that this is the same character from Dumbo but I do believe that because of the character looking very much like the one from Dumbo and the fact that he is voiced by Sterling, that it is indeed the same character, just aged up. It's been 11 years after all.
Role
Now this is going to sound weird. Mr Stork is an important character with a minor role in the film. What do I mean by this? Simple, Mr. Stork isn't in much of Dumbo or Lambert The Sheepish Lion but in both pieces of animation but having said that he is the one that sets the events of both stories in motion by delivering the characters to their mothers. Albeit, he made an error with Lambert but everyone has their off days.
Personality
We really don't know that much about Mr. Stork's personality other then, that he is dedicated to his job and cares for the little ones, he delivers. It may just be Sterling's voice but he seems to be a very nurturing character.
Favorite Moment
As for my favorite moment, that's easy. It's when he sings happy birthday to Dumbo.
Just the way, he sells it and is so fun and again, you feel his dedication to his job while singing. It is such a great moment.
Is The Character Still Around?
That's hard to answer because he hasn't appeared in anything animated wise for quite some time. According to my research, the last thing, Mr. Stork was featured in was a cameo in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? And according to the Disney Wiki, Jim Cummings is currently Mr. Stork's voice actor but I've checked multiple sites including Behind The Voice Actors and have not found anything to confirm this. Now he does make appearances in the parks, appears as a part of Dumbo The Flying Elephant and on a sign for the Baby Mine store at Tokyo Disney.
But other then that, Mr. Stork really hasn't been used for quite some time. Unlike some other characters, I'll be featuring I won't say that Mr. Stork has been lost to time but rather he's been dormant for quite some time. I would like to see Mr. Stork make a reappearance in some piece of animation. Thankfully, it wasn't Dumbo II. And if we go by my What If They Remade Dumbo article, I think Jim Cummings would be a fine voice actor for the role. Join me next time as I continue this spotlight by spotlighting a character that is a far on the other end as Mr. Stork as possible and just a little mad. Join me next time as I look at...
