Classic Shorts Showcase: The Band Concert

Hello & welcome back to Classic Shorts Showcase.  Today, we are taking a look at easily one of the best Mickey Mouse shorts to come out and one of my personal favorites.  Join me as I take a look at The Band Concert.

The Plot

Mickey and his band are putting on a free concert in the park,  playing the William Tell Overture.  Though, they are interrupted by Donald who wants to join in.

Which led to many hilarious moments with Donald breaking in.  It was funny to see and there were great little gags throughout such as the ice cream going down Mickey's back or Donald getting caught in one of the instruments.  Or the bee, that distracted the show.

But the big thing that I truly love about this short is the storm and and all of the crazy visuals that happen within it.  It was intense.

There is just so much going on here, that your'e eyes cannot be torn away.  It is just mesmerizing to view.    It was great to look at.

Characters

Mickey Mouse voiced by Walt Disney

I love Mickey in this short as you see him try to keep everything cool while Donald is getting under his skin.    And you see how intense,  it gets during The Storm.   He really got into it, and that was so much fun to see. Sidenote:  This was Mickey's first appearance in color and it was a great welcome to that field.

Donald Duck voiced by Clarence "Ducky" Nash

Donald was so funny in this short with how, he was  trying so hard with how he was trying to but in and you could just see that he was getting on Mickey's every last nerve.  It was truly a sight to see.     Donald was great in this role.

The Band

The band was one of the other highlights, you could see how serious they were with their performances.   They took their craft seriously and really got into it.   Again,  it was rather intense.  That is the best word for this short.  Everything was intense.

Music

William Tell Overture

Now, this is the full version which was not used in the short but this piece of music has made quite a few appearances in animation overall and I feel that it was used rather effectively here.

Turkey in the Straw

Now this was not the first time, this piece of music appeared in a Mickey short as it was also featured in Steamboat Willie but here it was used differently as it was used mostly as way to have Donald try and steal the spotlight and that was a great idea.  It came through rather well.

The Storm

This.. THIS is where everything picks up and the intensity drives in. You just know that something big is going down and the short sells  that quite well.   The anticipation is building and you know something is about to go down.

My Final Thoughts

I LOVE THIS SHORT!  This is my favorite Mickey short just because of how much fun and how intense it is.  Your heart is pounding during The Storm and both the music and the visuals really help to sell that.  There is a reason why, this is deemed one of the greatest shorts of all time.  It's just that good.   Honestly, this review did not do it justice.  Join me next week as I take a look at a short from 2011 that is rather adorable and my opinion has earned the right to be called a classic.  Join me next time as I take a look at...
