Classic Pixar Shorts Showcase: Presto

Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney and after a month off,  Classic Pixar Shorts Showcase is back. And today, we are taking a look at Presto.  Now,  this short while not my favorite was still pretty funny and it seems to take cues from classic shorts such as Tom and Jerry.

The Plot

As mentioned above,  this short relies on slapstick to tell it's story  and that does work well.  To set up, our plot is about a magician, Presto, and his Alec Azam.  They are putting on a magic show and Alec was trying to get a carrot to eat but Presto took because it was time to start the show and we see with Presto's magic hat and it disappears but not really as it just moves from one place to the other and during the show, is where the slapstick really comes in with stuff such as Presto being electrocuted and he ends up dancing.  That was weird.  But before that, it was fun watching Presto just lose his temper and smash the carrot out of anger and the back and forth between Presto and Alec is really funny such as in the beginning, when Presto tries to pull Alec out of the hat but he gets a mousetrap instead after Alec thought he was going to be fed.  We then see Presto throw an egg into the hat to lure Alec but Presto ends up with egg on his face.  Out of frustration, Presto makes a carrot appear and then turns it into a flower.   Presto tries to get Alec but instead the audience gets to see his underwear.  He then attempts to hit Alec with a ladder but that backfires as he is hit with the ladder and he then uses a piece of it to smash the carrot and this is when, he's electrocuted.  The crowd cheers for Alec and Presto.  Frustrated, Alec walks away but after hearing the applause, Presto calls Alec over and presents him with another carrot as they close out the show. All in all, this was pretty funny and very enjoyable.

Characters

Alec Azam

I liked Alec, he was very funny and I felt for him with the carrot and in some respects, felt that he was in the right with doing what he did to Presto.

Presto

Presto was okay and I at first that he was supposed to be the antagonist of this short but that's really the case as this is more akin to Tom and Jerry, where there is no hero or villain because both were equal in the violence, they delivered. Sure, Alec was more likable but one cannot deny that what he did was inherently evil.

My Final Thoughts

All in all, this is an okay short.  Not one of my favorites but very very enjoyable and I had a fun time watching it. This is one, I highly suggest, if you get the chance. Join me next week as I take a look at...
