Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney. You may have noticed in the past that I am rather fond of the movie, Tangled. I may have gone on record saying that it's one of my all time favorite Disney movies. Okay, so my love of Tangled is quite well-known at this point. I've probably done more articles on this film than any other. And about two weeks ago, there were rumors of an animated series based on the 2010 film coming in 2017. Disney has officially confirmed that Tangled: The Animated Series will on Disney Channel in 2017. And well, my reaction can be summed up as such.
I'm super excited about this. Especially after reading this.
This new series will feature Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi reprising their roles of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider (nee Eugene) from the movie and showcase new songs from Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater, who were responsible for all of those catchy tunes in the original film.
I wasn't surprised to see Mandy Moore back as she's been getting into voice acting and already has another Disney cartoon, with Sheriff Callie's Wild West.
But the bigger thing here is that Alan Menken and Glenn Slater are back to write new songs. That should be awesome. Now, there are a couple things that are worth mentioning that could be cause for concern. The first one is the timeline is a bit confusing.
The series takes place in between the events of the feature film and the start of the utterly charming 2012 short film Tangled Ever After.
This would be fine except for, the promo image for the show had Rapunzel with long blonde hair. And if you remember, the end of the movie, Eugene cut her hair and was now a brunette and Disney even made sure to keep the short haircut in Tangled Ever After.
I could overlook this as when Rapunzel appeared on Sofia The First, she had her long blonde hair.
This appearance I'm willing to let slide because it's chalked up that Sofia's amulet summons the princesses in their most iconic looks and thus, Rapunzel has her long blonde hair. But with this new show taking place in between the events of the movie and the short, I do wish that they had kept the short brunette hair. As it represents Rapunzel's growth as a character in how she has gone from being a sweet and naive teenager to becoming a mature young lady. Look, I actually prefer Rapunzel's blonde hair look more but it feels wrong to have her with blonde hair, if this show takes place after the events of the movie. One other big thing of note here is that this show will be 2D. Which will be a bit of a rough transition as this was a CGI movie but I do think that this is the better way to go as TV on CGI still has a bit of a way to go. (Exception being Nick's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).
Now one other thing that people seem to be disregarding with the announcement of this show is that it's going to air on Disney Junior. And don't get me wrong, Disney Junior does have some decent shows. My hope here though is that this show will be like The 7D, which airs on both Disney XD and Disney Junior and be a show that all ages can enjoy. Just because it's a Disney Junior show doesn't mean it won't be good. I have faith in this project especially with them getting the staff back.
So, yeah I'm still excited for this show and can't wait for it to get here. 2017 can't get here fast enough. What are your thoughts on this news? Let me know in the comments. Peace!
