Classic Shorts Showcase: The Big Bad Wolf

Welcome to back to Classic Shorts Showcase and today, we continue Three Little Pigs Thursday as I take a look at the first sequel short, The Big Bad Wolf.    Let's dive right into it and begin.

The Plot

Last time, the plot of the short was a basic retelling of The Three Little Pigs.  This time the short's plot was a retelling of Little Red Hiding Hood with the Pigs serving as supporting characters.  Now I don't know if this was the first time this had been done but I don't know I feel like that I have seen this before.  Now I'm not saying that this takes away from the fun idea that this short presented but the entire time I had this nagging feeling that I had seen this done somewhere else.

Characters

Two things seeing as the voice actors for the Pigs and Wolf are the same, I won't be listing their voice actors and seeing as we have a new character, I'll start with her. This will be be broken down into New, Returning, & Villain.

New Character

Little Red Hiding Hood

Little Red Hiding Hood was an all right character.  Nothing to special about her while she appeared to be the main character of this short, she really didn't do much.  Though she was a sweet character but just as with Slue Foot Slue in that while she was an okay character,   I felt nothing towards her.  I didn't like or dislike her.

Returning Characters

Practical Pig

Once again, this short proves why Practical is my favorite.  He takes charge and is  serious. Also he is the only one willing to stand up to the Wolf.  With this short, I think you could say that he takes on the role of the Hunter from the Little Red Hiding Hood tale as he is the one to fight off the wolf.  In a humorous manner as he pops popcorn in Wolf's pants.  That was pretty funny. As much fun as Practical was, he had the least amount of screen time and the least amount of dialogue.  Which is ashame because I really like him.  Though this short did establish and reinforce that out of the three brothers, he is the wisest such as when he tells Little Red to take the long road to avoid the Big Bad Wolf.     That was a nice touch but even still I wish that there was more of him in this short because we didn't seem him again until the climax of the short.

Fifer & Fiddler

Just as how this established Practical as the one to solve all the problems that the brothers face, this short reinforced that Fifer  & Fiddler are wusses.  All they talk about is how they can take down the Wolf but of course when they come across him they run off and leave Little Red there to fend for herself. After they had agreed to walk with her to Grandma's house to protect but they run off and leave a little girl by herself with The Big Bad Wolf. What?!?!  She is a child and I believe that they are older.  Leaving a little girl alone with a Wolf is not a brave or even smart thing to do. This short made me feel like they rely on Practical too much.  I don't dislike them  but I didn't warm up to them much with this short.  Let me just say that while not infuriated with these two, I was rather disappointed that there was no real growth.  Though it does appear that this short and it's predecessor could be viewed as separate entities that just happen to feature the same characters.

Villain

The Big Bad Wolf

Big Bad stole the short this time round as he should seeing as he is the titular character.  This time he was over the top and I love how they played with the "Grandma, my"  bit from the Little Red Hiding Hood story by adding in some great jokes. Plus he broke the fourth wall at one point to address the audience asks "How I'm doing?"    It was simple but effective.  That moment showed that fourth wall breaking can be effective when done subtly.  It was nice to see that while still the same old Wolf from the fist short, they were able to use him as the Wolf for Little Red Hiding Hood too.

My Final Thoughts

This short I'll admit is not as strong as the first one but there will still enjoyable moments.  The Big Bad Wolf was hilarious and Practical was great in the climax.  Really, the only thing that brought this short were Fifer and Fiddler. That is sad to say but it's the truth.  Still,  this is a good enough short to watch at least once.  Join me next time when I continue Three Little Pigs Thursday as I review Three Little Wolves.
