Christmas Shorts Showcase: Mickey and Minnie's The Gift of the Magi (Mickey's Once Upon A Christmas)

Hello and welcome back, today, we continue our back to back look of my two favorite segments from Mickey's Once Upon A Christmas.  Now this one is I've decided to make a Christmas Shorts Showcase seeing as it's  an adaption of the classic tale,  The Gift of the Magi.   So, I feel it works perfectly for Showcase with that out of the way, let's begin.

The Plot

It's Christmas Eve and Mickey and Minnie want to get each other the perfect gift for each other.  Minnie wants to get Mickey, a case for his harmonica and Mickey wants to get a chain for Minnie's watch but both are short on money and have to try and find another way.  They head off to work, Mickey works at a tree lot  run by Pete and he is about to sell a ten foot tree to a family that can't afford but Mickey had a little tree that he thinks, they can afford and gives it to them. Pete being angry with this takes all the money, Mickey made from that sale away leaving Mickey in the same position he was in before.  Later on,  Mickey is sitting depressed and the fire chief hears Mickey playing his harmonica and asks him to play for the toy drive concert as the band hadn't shown up as they were putting out a fire at the tree lot. They finally show up and Mickey plays with the bad, who just happens to be the Firehouse Five.   The show runs late but Mickey stays and he later goes back to the store where he saw the chain but it was closing and the owner tells Mickey that he doesn't think that the harmonica is worth much until he hears Mickey play it. On Minnie's end, she had been working hard as a gift wrapper at Mortimer's (a parody of Macy's) in hopes of getting a Christmas bonus. Well, she gets the bonus but it turns out to be a fruitcake.  Minnie doesn't have any money to get Mickey's present and though we don't see it onscreen,  Minnie does trade in her watch. At the end of the segment, Mickey and Minnie give each other their gifts and you can see they are surprised that they were willing to part with things that meant so much to them and Minnie evens says something along these lines but Mickey tells Minnie that she's the most important thing in his life.   It was a touching moment and I think that this segment shows how much these two really care for each other.

Characters

Now just like yesterday, I won't be breaking this down anymore then needed. Let's begin.

Mickey voiced by Wayne Allwine

Now as I stated,  Mickey was very sweet in this segment.  It just came through all much he cared for Minnie and  it was just a fun ride to see Mickey try and try. You feel bad as he comes up short but at the end, it is seen that these two always love each other and will go to great lengths for one another.

Minnie voiced by Russi Taylor

Minnie's arc was similar to that of Mickey's but I do wish that we had actually seen more of it as the short really focuses on Mickey's side of the story.  I mean, we do see Minnie at Mortimer's getting the Christmas Bonus and that's about it because after that, the rest of the short spends time with Mickey.   Don't get me wrong, I really like this segment but I think it would've been neat if they had Minnie go to the same store where Mickey traded his harmonica.  They could've had Minnie enter right before Mickey came along. I don't know, I just think that would've been really sweet. Still, Minnie was very sweet in this segment.

My Final  Thoughts

All in all,  I love this segment.   I mean there is that one minor issue I have of the segment spending too much time with Mickey but I'm willing to overlook that because of how enjoyable, I think this segment really is and I can't suggest it enough.   Well, folks, we are entering the home stretch of our Christmas articles.  Join me next time as I do a special Vs.  Two characters playing the same role will go up against each other and we will see who comes out on top.  Next week, we will have a Scrooge face off. but which two.  Well, let's just say my rule of no longer looking at properties purchased by Disney no longer exists as  we have

Ebeneezer Scrooge  (Scrooge McDuck)  Vs.   Ebeneezer Scrooge (Micheal Caine)

Now for those of you wondering, I do like the Jim Carrey Christmas Carol and I actually consider it one of the better adaptions of A Christmas Carol but I decided not to include him as I thought this match up would be more fun. See you next time.

  1. Whatever we have that isn't broken goes up there. As with most other out of doors Christmas decorations,. Utilize great tiongkok along with cups instead of disposable discs, cups, and also plastic material utensils.
