Hello & welcome back to Classic Shorts Showcase. Today, I'll be taking a look at Springtime. Springtime is the first of what has been deemed the "4 Seasons" shorts from the Silly Symphonies. Now last, November on a previous Showcase, I reviewed the short Autumn. Overall, I'd like Autumn and what did I think of the first short in "4 Seasons" collection, it was okay. With that out of the way, let's begin.
The Plot
Now admittedly, there isn't much of a plot here as we are just watching, I wouldn't even say get ready for springtime but rather just their daily lives in springtime. Perhaps, I'm missing something here but I don't know. Then again, this is one of the earlier Silly Symphonies and there were more or less just showcases of animation for the talented staff. Mind you, not a bad thing and this is a rather entertaining short. So yeah, don't go in expecting a lot of plot.
Memorable Moments
Now once again, there are no characters that we follow in this short. So instead, I'll be talking about what I consider to be the Memorable Moments. So let's begin.
Tree Shower
This is my favorite moment in the short. This was actually the result of a previous joke, where lighting caused a rain cloud to burst and so this tree decided to take a show and yeah, he is picking at his belly button. Weird, didn't trees had belly buttons. But I love the payoff at the end when the thunder hits him in the back and and part of his back to where it look like a flap on a pair of PJ's where the bottom would be. Odd little joke but that's why I loved this moment so much. Honestly, this sequence cannot be done justice in words, you've got to see it.
Spider Playing Cobweb Harp/Frog Play Turtle Drums
I've noticed in these shorts that it appears a lot of the earlier shorts love featuring the characters playing music. Now yes, I know that was a big thing in Silly Symphonies but what I'm referring to is the characters playing instruments that are just regular objects such as the spider here playing the cobweb as a harp. Now in this same vein, there is one more moment I wish to bring up.
This has to have become one of the oldest gags regarding turtles again considering that this is one of the first Silly Symphonies, I can't say if it was so old at the time but it gets a chuckle out of me but them, I think "That's kinda cruel to the turtles".
My Final Thoughts
Not a bad beginning for the "4 Seasons". Although, I do think Autumn is better then Springtime but improvement does come with time. This is not a bad short, it is highly enjoyable and I can already tell you that I will be reviewing Summer, this June, when summer rolls around but as for this short, give it a watch. It's worth it.
