Shere Khan Vs. Scar

Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney.  And welcome back to Vs.  Man,  it's been a long time since I've done one of these.  And this is one, I've wanted to do for the longest time but could not figure out until I rewatched The Jungle Book for the Sterling Holloway Spotlight. From The Jungle Book,  Shere Khan and from The Lion King, Scar.   This is one I'd been wanting to do since last year but I could never figure out how.  Anyways, here are the rounds that'll be included  Personality (Round 1), who has the better personality,  Desire (Round 2), which character has the more interesting desire,  Threat Level  (Round 3),  who was more threatening in their respective film, Final Fight (Round 4),  who  had the  better battle at the  end,  & Film Factor (The Final Round), who works better in their respective film.  With that out of the way, let's begin.

Personality (Round 1)

Shere Khan

Khan is suave, smart and sophisticated.  He is a villain with class but at the same time, not afraid to use his claws.  He is a bit egotistical and thinks very highly of himself.  He fears very little save for man's red fire.  He is a tough as nails, no nonsense villain and that is what really makes him enjoyable.

Scar

Scar  is resentful, jealous and maybe a little petty.  And that's not a bad thing and Jeremy Irons delivers all of this  and  that works well for his character but after he wins,  he becomes  a whiner and a little annoying.   And honestly,  I don't feel that the film does all that well to convey the stresses and hardships that come with the title of being king that Scar faced.   So for that reason,  I have to give this round to Shere Khan

Desire (Round 2)

Shere Khan

Shere Khan wants to kill Mowgli.  That is it pure & simple.  He wants to do it because he hates man and that is vicious.   He wants to kill.  I think that is the darkest desire, we've ever covered on Vs.   He doesn't care that Mowgli is just a kid.  He views him as a threat.

Scar

Scar's desire is well defined.  He wants to be king and he goes to great lengths to get this title.  Including turning on his own brother and killing him and running his nephew out of the jungle.   I went over already that Scar gets kinda boring after he wins but I have to give this round to him for the fact that he won. He actually accomplished he wanted.   Sure,  he didn't have the adorning love of his subjects, like he wanted but after Mufasa was killed and Simba had been run off,  he became king.   So I have to give this round to...

Scar

Threat Level  (Round 3)

Shere Khan

Khan  can send shivers down the spines of animals in the jungle. Part of what makes him so threatening is the fact that he barely see him in the beginning.  He's there all right but he is lurking in the shadows. And when we finally see him, it's understandable because the way he carries himself.  He is frightening and he doesn't take any crud from anyone and very few have the nerve to stand up to him.

Scar

Scar can be threatening, when he wants to be.  Especially during the Be Prepared number.  He is in full command there and during the final battle, he is a wee bit scary but throughout the rest of the film, while he's a good villain,  he doesn't actually come off as threatening.  He's not a bad villain but he doesn't feel like a  real threat whereas throughout all of The Jungle Book, Shere Khan feel likes a genuine threat and for that, I have to give this round to...

Shere Khan

Final Fight (Round 4)

Shere Khan

Okay,  I have to be honest for the most part, the final battle in The Jungle Book was good.  Great even,  Shere Khan put up a fierce fight and he was cornered by Baloo, Bagheera, Mowgli, and The Vultures.  And I understand that Shere Khan is afraid of fire but just tying burning branch to his tail causing him to run off was kinda of a letdown.

Scar

Okay, there is one word to describe the final fight between Scar and Simba, it's intense.   Seriously,  the bout between these two family members is everything that you want to see and Scar's death is a satisfying payoff for the villain.   This is the kind of fight that I love to see and for that reason, I have to give this round to...

Scar

The Film Factor  (The Final Round)

All right, this is it.  The final round to determine, the better ferocious feline.   They're all tied up with Shere Khan winning Personality & Threat Level, while Scar took Desire & Final Fight.   Now, let's see who works better in their respective film.

Shere Khan

When Shere Khan is onscreen, he commands attention and by George, does he get it.  When he is onscreen,  you know who rules the jungle.  Shere Khan's presence overshadows every character that he interacts with. It's just something about the way, he carries himself.

Scar

Scar can be a commanding force, when he wants to be.  Such as Be Prepared or the final bout with Simba but he really doesn't command attention, the same way Shere Khan does.  I find that most of the other characters in The Lion King tend to overshadow Scar.  And that's not because he's a bad character but rather because this film has so many good characters that it is surprising that Scar seems to be the only main character that really gets overshadowed.   Well okay maybe Zazu too but we aren't talking about him.  This is a tough call but I think that I have to give this round to...

Shere Khan

The End Result!

So by a score of 3 -2,  Shere Khan came out on top.  These are both great villains but  Khan just clawed his way to the top.  Agree/Disagree.  Let, me know in the comments.  Peace!
