Classic Pixar Shorts Showcase: Red's Dream





Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney and welcome back to Classic Pixar Shorts Showcase.  I HATE CLOWNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!       What does this have to do with this review other then the fact I was watching it between my fingers.   Well,  this short is about a unicycle that dreamed of performing with a clown.  WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Let's get this over with.



The Plot
Well,  I already have you the basic plot up above in the intro.   We open this short in a bike shop and there we see a lone unicycle who dreams of making it big in the circus performing with a clown named Pennywise ,  sorry Lumpy, who is a master serial killer, juggler who keeps dropping his chainsaws, balls, and Red picks them back up and at one point juggles them using his brakes to juggle.  It was a really neat trick and also keep an eye for the Luxo ball as that is the spotlight in Red's dream.  Believe me,  I tried to stay focused on the background because even though, this short was called Red's Dream, it contained my nightmare fuel.   Red, at the end wakes up and is sad that the dream is over whereas I was relieved.  Okay, this is going to sound odd but when I watching this short, I was thinking to myself, "the animation feels dated".  I can't explain that one.  This short came out in '87 and it feels like something from the '80s with the animation that was used.

I liked Red, he was very sweet and cute.   Again, this short shows how good Pixar is at bringing life to non living objects.   He in a way, reminds of Susie The Little Blue Coupe in the early part of that short with how happy go lucky, they both were.

My Final Thoughts
While I liked the character of Red, I have no desire to re watch this short anytime soon.  And before anyone points it out, the irony of my favorite film being Dumbo is not lost on me.  Join me next time as I take a look at...

    The animation feels dated because of how far computer animation has come over the last two decades. Wait to you get to Tin Toy and look at the baby (man is that thing dated beyond belief by how bad the baby is, even though the simple reflection of the window on Tin Toy's head was revolutionary). That and it's a somewhat old-fashioned concept.

    It's a shame you didn't watch much of this. Yeah the clown is creepy, but Red is a testament to how brilliant the animation is. Sure everyone remembers Luxo Jr. but no one ever stops and sees how brilliantly animated Red is. He's got less moving parts than Luxo but conveys just as much. Without giving it a face you end up feeling sorry for a unicycle. They put all that expression into just something as simple as a unicycle where other companies fail to make you feel sorry for their lead character for an entire film.

    It's funny how a unicycle can convey more emotion than the clown in this short :P

    Yes, Red is great and I liked Red. Also, I decided to take this review in a less serious route and decide to play up my fear of clowns. Trust me, it's not played up too much but I found that I liked doing the review that way.
