Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney. And today, we continue our Summer Blowout as we take a look at the next Phineas and Ferb special, Summer Belongs To You. Without further ado, let's jump in.
The Plot
The plot of this special is very reminiscent of the Jules Verne story, Around The World In 80 Days. Just condensed down to one day. We start out with Candace calling her boyfriend, Jeremy. Who happens to be in France and it's 2:00 in the morning. Meanwhile, the boy are outside as the phone call is interrupted by shaking as it turns out to be a robot jumping rope.
Candace tries to call her mom to let them know what is going on but she can't hear her over all of the noise. And as the time, Linda gets home, the robot is gone. Phineas and Ferb later go through a scrapbook and Phineas comments on that they need to do something more challenging.
Phineas comes up with the idea to create the biggest longest most fun day of summer ever. Meanwhile, Doof takes his daughter, Vanessa on a trip to Tokyo but is annoyed to see that her father brought work on this trip, I.E., a kidnapped Major Monogram. The next morning, Candace is awoken at five in the morning from a dream about Jeremy being with French girls. She is woken up from this dream at five in the morning, when her brothers explain to their friends how they plan to fly around the world in it's opposing direction in one day. And this is where we get what is easily one of the highlights of the episode. A Clay Aiken and Chaka Khan duet.
Which this becomes a running joke that Candace missed this performance but alas, there is one naysayer amongst the group as local bully, Buford doesn't think Phineas and Ferb can do it. And puts it to a bet. And if our main characters lose, they have to admit that they are governed by the laws of physics. But how, will our fearless heroes travel such a long distance in such a short amount of time? Why in this?
The Amazing Sun-Beater 3000! Though Phineas' crush, Isabella fears that he'll lose but Phineas is so confident and that's why he hired Clay Aiken. Meanwhile, Perry/Agent P gets a message from Carl, the intern of O.W.C.A. (Organiztion With A Cool Acronym) telling him that Major Monogram hasn't been kidnapped and is just on vacation. He is also informed of his arch rival, Doof being on vacation in Tokyo with his daughter. Carl tells the Agent not to worry as it's also the site of the annual good guy convention but the platypus suspects something is amiss and goes searching for the Major, anyways. During breakfast with her best friend, Candace wonders what her relationship status with Jeremy is as he's never called her his "G" word. Stacey tells her friend that by her calling Jeremy, her boyfriend that would make the relationship valid. It's at this point that Candace comes out to stop her brothers. That is until she notices that one of their stops is Paris and knowing that Jeremy is there, she decides to go with them.
I've already made mention of how Doof brought his work with him and we see him pick it up at the Tokyo airport. Which also happens to be the first stop for the Amazing Sun-Beater. And here we get a really weird J-Pop number as the kids meet Stacey's relatives.
Though the poor Sun-Beater took a hit and needs refueling. But what luck, Stacey's family owns a tempura restaurant and they're loaned vegetable oil to get the plane moving again. It's here that Vanessa with her dad at the Tokyo Tower decides to angrily walk away and there runs into Perry, who has come to stop her father. Unfortunately for Vanessa, her father's plan which involves a giant water balloon on top of Tokyo Tower gets out of hand and knocks her off the tower but she finds a safe landing on the Sun-Beater and from there joins the ride.
Doof is a bit displeased that the people, who rescued his daughter are now running off with his daughter. And to the dismay of Agent P and Major Monogram, they team up in Perry's hover car. And we see the kids head to the Himalayas and Phineas tells the others to keep their eyes out for the Klimpaloon. Which is a magical old timey bathing suit. It's basically the show's stand-in for a yeti. Candace objects saying that her brother only made it up and it's here that the Sun-Beater runs into it's second problem as the additional weight of Vanessa is more than the plane can handle. And it's here in a collision with a mountain, the Sun-Beater has it's wings clipped off. Boy, it seems like if it can go wrong for the kids on their journey, it will go wrong. Thankfully, their friend Baljeet remembers that he has an uncle that resides not far from where they crashed. He apparently runs a rubber band factory and we learn of it through a rehearsed Bollywood musical number. And the kids use rubber bands provided by Baljeet's uncle to take them to their next destantion.
Though, the rubber band ball doesn't last very long as it breaks apart during the kids' travels to their next stop as observed up above. After some more travels around the world, the kids make it to their next stop. Paris. Where Isabelle sings her heart about Phineas being oblivious to her crush and Candace finally gets conformation from Jeremy that they are a couple.
And here the Sun-Beater has been turned into a boat and things don't get any better for our brave heroes as they're deserted on a desert island. And it's here, where Phineas almost gives up and we get a great little jab at Spongebob Squarepants.
As someone that doesn't like Spongebob and never has, I appreciated this jab.
Look! A sponge and a starfish! There's gotta be something we can make out of this! Ah! Oh no, that's ridiculous!
It's here, where Isabella bucks up and tells Phineas that he can do it no matter what as he's done so many great things, this summer. And how do they get back home. They travel by map. Literally, they take the giant map that they had been using and fold it into a giant paper airplane.
The kids make it back to Danville but there may not be enough time left as the sun is going down but Buford, who has had a change of heart now wants to help everyone as he returns all of the bikes that he had stolen from the kids as that was his part of the deal.
And they make it back in time and the episode ends with a giant musical number celebrating the summer. Everything about this episode is just a bunch of fun as you watch the kids travel from one location to the next. Even with all of the problems that they run into while travelling , they never gave up. Well okay, Phineas did at one point but he was talked out of it rather quickly.
Characters
Now, I won't be going over every character in this special as we'll be here all day otherwise. Instead, I'll only be focusing on the characters that are crucial to the episode. With that out of the way, let's begin.
Main Characters
Phineas voiced by Vincent Martella
I liked seeing Phineas in this as he had an amount of determination that is impressive for a young kid, his age.
Ferb voiced by Thomas Sangster
Ferb was there. Ferb is Ferb and there isn't much to more him than that.
Candace voiced by Ashley Tisdale
I think this is the earliest, we've seen Candace not want to bust her brothers and instead focus on something else in her life. And that being her relationship with Jeremy and I like that. I always prefer it when the show gives her more to do then busting her brothers.
Supporting Characters
Buford voiced by Bobby Gaylor
Buford, while starting out as the antagonist did come around in the end and that was nice to see as he's really not a bad guy. And it was kinda sweet to see him want Phineas to complete his goal.
Isabella voiced by Alyson Stoner
And here we continue the trend of Isabella's crush on Phineas being obvious to everyone but Phineas. It's cute. I dunno, I just think it's cute and it's something that I always enjoy seeing.
Dr. Doofenshrimtz and Vanessa voiced by Dan Povenmire & Olivia Olson
I feel like I need to talk about these two together as there storylines go hand in hand. Doof needed to see that he couldn't always be in his work and had to give his daughter, some of his attention. And Vanessa, well she got that and she showed her dad that she would like a little time with him.
Perry/Agent P voiced by Frank Welker
Perry's side of the episode was fun, if a bit brief with everything else going on.
Music
I Believe We Can
This part cracks me everytime. I just love this song and the fact that it's Clay Aiken is just so random and toss Chaka Khan into the mix and it gets even better. This is one of my favorite songs from the show.
J-Pop (Welcome To Tokyo)
Yeah, Candace sums up my feelings on this number. I have no idea what just happened either. This number is so odd. It's fun but what was that?
Rubber Bands, Rubber Balls
Here's another fun little song. I like the Bollywood flavor of it and helps to make it feel as though you really are travelling around the world. It's fun but I don't know if I'd listen to it again.
Bouncing Around The World
This is more like it. Short and simple but it's a pleasure on the ears. And it's a great use of a montage to show the kids travelling to various destinations with slowing down the episode.
City of Love
Seriosuly, Phineas! How oblivious could you be? Isabella is pouring her heart out to you and all you can think about is fixing the Sun-Beater. Dude, wake up.
Follow The Sun
A short little beach number that is a joy to listen to.
Summer Belongs To You
Phineas and Ferb has always been great with ending songs and this is no exception. This song is a great celebration of not just this episode but the series to this point. I really need to add this song to my ITunes library. It's such a great song and if it doesn't lift your spirits, something is wrong. This song is just something that can feel a person with joy and make the day a bit better.
My Final Thoughts
I love this episode and I forgot how much I enjoyed it until writing this review. If you haven't seen Phineas and Ferb, this is a great starting point. This episode is just such a blast and one, you guys really should check out. Join me next time as the Summer Blowout continues as we see Phineas and Ferb take on the Wizard of Oz in...
