Music Fridays # 172: Disney Dads On Stage

Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney and to another edition of Music Fridays.  Father's Day is coming up, this weekend and I've decided to celebrate it by taking a look at the songs from and about Disney dads from Disney's stage productions. With that out of the way, let's begin.

No Matter What

We start with a number from Beauty and The Beast, where Maurice comforts in his daughter that it's okay to be different and that is nothing wrong with standing out amongst the crowd.  As he sings, you can truly hear the love that Maurice has for Belle and that he will always support and love her.  This is a sweet number that shows how much these two care for one another.

They Live In You

Our next two songs come from one of my favorite Disney musicals . Our first number talks of how all the great kings that have come before Simba live within him and will always be watching over him.  It's a very symbolic message as we see that they will always be there to guide him, no matter what.

He Lives In You

As you'll see  a few  of our songs are sung about the fathers and this here is the reprise of the first song now sung by Rafiki to a grown Simba after Mufasa has passed away. It has the same message of the original song but is more personal in that it is talking about how even long after he is gone, Mufasa stills lives within Simba and will always be there for him.  Personally, I think I like this one more as it's more of a core reminder to our hero that even if the person that you looked up to is gone,  you can still honor their name.

If Only (Reprise)

We now go from The Savannah to the sea and this song comes at the end of The Little Mermaid's Broadway production.  I enjoy the song, If Only but this is the first time that I've heard the reprise and it's a sweet number befitting of these two characters showing how much that they care for one another and that Triton finally realizes that he has to let Ariel go. And it shows that sometimes the hardest thing to do is to let go.

Not My Dad

Our last two numbers come from Finding Nemo: The Musical and are both reprises.  They are sung by Nemo about Marlin and there is a reason that I'm including both.  This first song shows that Nemo doesn't have faith in his dad to find him. Which going by what we know about Marlin, is a fair assessment but that also has to hurt a bit because Marlin is trying to be the best dad for Nemo but he is understandably overprotective.

That's My Dad

I kinda want to call out Nemo for saying that he knew all along but I think underneath he did believe that his dad could be brave, when push came to shove and that is what Finding Nemo shows that Marlin will do anything to get his son back and here with this song, we are hearing that and how Nemo is finally happy as he's always loved his dad but this seems like the first time that's he's ever been proud of his father.

I hope that you've enjoyed my look at these Disney Dads songs.  Which one is your favorite? Peace!
