Ah, Brave. This was quite a good film but some people have taken it upon themselves to declare that this film isn't as good as previous Pixar entries. For a better clarification on this read, R8's article on this. His article is so good that writing this one is almost moot. But I still wanted to give my take on this subject. Me, I'm just tired of people crying that this film is the end of Pixar. Look, if you said that last year when Cars 2 came out, I would've understood. Because that film was different in quality from Pixar.
But Brave is a good film with a lot of heart and the relationship between Merdia and Queen Elinor is one of the best mother/daughter relationships in a film that I've seen in any film. It is handled so delicately and you can feel the love for each other throughout the entire film.
This is the driving force of the film and y'know what it works. Also while I do get the comparison to Brother Bear, could someone please explain to me in what way this movie is similar to How To Train Your Dragon. I've been seeing that comparison pop up in certain reviews and maybe it's because I've yet to see that film but I don't get the comparison. It just seems like an odd comparison to me.
Also, maybe it's just me but I think part of the backlash from this film is that it is less like a Pixar film and more like a Disney film. I know that seems confusing but let me explain, Merdia is the first Pixar Princess and Disney is known for princess films to the point where they've become stereotyped with that label by some people. The thing is though, Merdia is her own character and different from the other princess characters. She is a strong, independent character and she isn't looking for love. Yes, this is a fairy tale film and we've seem oodles of fairy tale films from Disney and even though Pixar is a part of Disney now, I don't think we should lump it it just yet even if Merdia will be joining the Princess Line, if she hasn't already.
In conclusion, I'm perplexed by the backlash this film has been getting from some groups. It's as I said on R8's much better article, I think we should look at these as films on their own first and then as part of the Pixar library. In a strange way, it's like the Spider-Man thing going on right now with people now dissing the old film but in reverse. In my opinion, this is not a bad film, sure there are some flaws to it but that's true of any film and really the backlash is just annoying. Peace!
Funnily enough I too wrote about how people were complaning about how Pixar was getting too 'Dreamworks-lite' and why it was a stupid thing to say: http://ratin8tor-intoodeep.blogspot.co.nz/2012/07/in-too-deep-are-pixar-and-disney-films.html
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check that one out but the biggest influence for this article was your article from yesterday. I just felt that even though you summed up everything quite well, I wanted to get my opinion out there.
