Lately, Disney has been trying to revive some of their older properties. Two examples are The Muppets' new film titled The Muppets which comes out this Thanksgiving. Also this summer we we have Pooh Bear retruing in a new film again titled Winnie The Pooh. Now rumors have been circulating that Disney is in the early stage of working on a Mickey Mouse movie. One that would be released to theaters. While Mickey has starred in movies in the past such as Fun & Fancy Free and of course Fantasia. This would be the first full-length Mickey Mouse movie with a story focused on him released to theaters.
I find myself at odds, here because while I have always wanted a Mickey Mouse movie, it just seems too good to be true. While I do trust Disney with Mickey as he is the big star of Disney. Cartoon based movies lately have been less than stellar. Now from what I understand, the film would be hand-drawn and 2D. I appreciate as I really don't care for the CGI look of Mickey.
Now I think I should rephrase what I said, it's not that I dislike Mickey's CGI look. I just prefer him in his handrawn form because that is what I'm used to. Now I can't give you much more details as I said this film is still in the early stages. I'm also worried that 3-D would be slapped on for no reason and it would take away from the film. I should note that the Head animation team for Disney will be working on this project. So that does give me a little more hope because with them working on this film, the animation will be top notch.
Is this a bad idea? I really can't say yes or no. As I said, I have wanted a theatrical Mickey movie for the longest time. I think he deserves it as Donald and Goofy have already gotten their own movies in the theaters. So it is about time for Mickey to receive one. From my understanding Disney will have their feature animation team working on the film. That does put my heart at ease a little more but still I'm not sure how to feel about this.
While Mickey is still popular. His popularity has dwindled just a bit. While yes, there was the release of Epic Mickey. Which I still believe to be one of the best games I have played came out this year and also Mickey still does appear on TV with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Therefore, young children may know who the name of this famous Mouse. Mickey can always be found at all of the parks but if I'm not mistaken the last time anything Mickey related that had a new story would be the short Runaway Brain. Which came ou in '95 and was shown before A Goofy Movie. Other then that, the last time Mickey appeared on screen would Fantasia 2000. The first time he was seen in this film was the showing of The Sorrecer's Apprentince. The Second time was a talking cameo where he was looking for Doanld Duck. It was funny cameo but a cameo none the less.
While Mickey may not have been the star of his own theatrical film, he has starred in plenty of direct-to-video film and one of which that had a connected story as this proposed movie might have. That one being Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers
This here is a good example of a Mickey film with a connected story. Sure it may only be an hour and eight minutes but I still believe this to be a good example of a Mickey film with a connected story.
Now this brings me to my next point. What could the story be? I mean Mickey has tackled many subjects and authors from Dickens to Shakespeare. Yes there was a Mickey version of A Midsummer's Night Dream and it was good. Perhaps, they could go with either one of the proposed Mickey ideas from before the Renaissance took place. The two most notable are one where Mickey would have taken on the role of Columbus and the story of Columbus would have been retold using Disney characters.
Now the other one I could not find a picture to display it for but imagine the Bill Murray movie Stripes with Disney characters. Yes, you heard me right Stripes with Disney characters Though instead of the Army, Mickey, Donald, and Goofy would be joining the Navy.
That sounds like a wild concept and I don't think it would work in this day and age with how P.C., Mickey has become. Still, this leaves me wondering. As of writing this, I can't go one way or the other on this proposed Mickey movie. I like the idea because I have always wanted a Mickey movie in theaters but at the same time, I feel like this is just a dream or someone pulling my leg. I doubt Disney would mess up a movie starring Mickey but who knows? Right now, there isn't enough information out there to be either excited about this or embarrassed of being a Mickey fan because of this movie

In the end, only time will tell how I will feel about this movie. Though, if this does come out, I'll most likely go see it in theaters. What are your thoughts? Would you see a Mickey movie released to theaters if it comes out?
To close this article, which probably left me more emotionally confused than any other Can We Talk about. I give you this classic video of Walt. Never forget the words he says in this video.
So long as Disney fans don't forget that classic quote nothing can kill the love Mickey gets from his fans. Still this movies seems like an odd idea. What's your take on this? Tell me in the comments.
