Sterling Holloway Spotlight: Adult Flower (Bambi)

Hello & welcome back to the Sterling Holloway Spotlight.  Yep, for those who may not have realized it but I forgot a character. I forgot about his portrayal of Flower as an adult in Bambi. First off, I have to thank The Great Escapist because her wonderful essay on Sterling made me realize that I forgot this character.  Man, sometimes it pays to be an admin.  This one is going to work a wee bit differently seeing as we are dealing with an adult version of a character that we saw as a child throughout most of this film.  So,  with that out of the way, let's begin.  Per usual,  the categories include First Appearance,  Role, Personality,  Favorite Moment,   & finally Is The Character Still Around?

First Appearance

Flower as an adult first appears when Friend Owl warns the now adult friends of Bambi, Thumper, and Flower about the dangers of being twitterpated aka falling in love.  All three friends say that this won't happen to them but Flower is the first to fall in love as he falls for a female skunk named Bluebelle and Flower and Bluebelle have a son together whom they name Bambi after his best friend.

Role

Unlike say Mr. Stork or The Cheshire Cat,  Flower's role is just that to be a friend and somewhat of comic relief.  He is there to be a friend to Bambi and that's about it.

Personality

Flower is very kind and caring and will look after his friends.  He is very sweet in nature, always trying to look on the bright side.  His a rather optimistic character.

Favorite Moment

Technically,   my favorite moment with Flower is the introduction but seeing as this a Sterling retrospective, I have to go with when Sterling voiced him and for that, I have go with when Flower gets twitterpated.  It is just so adorable in how he freezes up and falls in love. It is just so sweet.

And this video of Friend Owl describing the feeling is perfect.   Y'know, it almost seems like Bambi, Thumper, & Flower set up the original Guy's Code in this clip.

Is This Character Still Around?

Yes and no.  What do I mean by this?  Flower is still around, he's quite popular.... as a child.  Adult Flower hasn't made any outside appearances since this film.  Most of Flower's appearances that I have found outside of this film depict him as a child.  Take for example, House of Mouse.

This is just a case of,  the child version of a character is more popular then the adult version.  Understandable seeing as, we spend more with Flower as a child then we do with him as an adult.  Similar to how you see more of cub Simba in merchandise then you do of Simba as an adult.   Also,  this is just my theory but I believe that people think that child versions of characters are cuter.   All right, glad we got this one out of the way.  Join me next week as we get the Spotlight back on track as I look at Amos from Ben and Me.
