Can We Talk about Girl Meets World (Follow-Up)

Hello  & welcome  back to A Look at Disney.  For the past  couple of months now,  the internet  has been abuzz with   images and trailers for the new Disney Channel  series,  Girl Meets World, the spin-off the  ABC '90s classic Boy Meets World.   And well,  I gotta be honest here and say that I'm....

And everything I've seen from the trailers have been fine.  Here take a look at one for yourself.   The trailer is cute  and does a good  job of selling the series without heavily relying on the fact this  is a continuation  of  Boy Meets World but here's where  all the other news reports seem to contradict what I just said.  From everything, I've read, show creator Daniel Jacobs  has said all cast members are welcome to be on the show and that's already been proven true as Shawn will appear in a future episode.

Okay, cool and Mr. Feeny will be in the pilot. Hey,  I'm fine with that but there are two characters that they are bringing into the show that make me wonder how much they are trying to bring  in old fans because  only  Boy Meets World  fans would remember these two.  That young boy,  Farkle  you saw  in the trailer is the son of Minkus.  Yeah,  Minkus.  Seriously, who  outside of hardcore  Boy Meets World fans actually remembers or cares about Minkus.  Didn't the original series make a joke about how he disappeared after the early seasons?  Minkus, why Minkus?   And for those curious,  here's what he looks like in the new series.

WOW, he grew up.  He doesn't look like the same nerd, he was on Boy Meets World.

And  the other one that surprised  me is Harvey.  You guys remember Harvey,  Cory's  high school bully.  Well,  he's now the janitor at the school that Cory's daughter, Riley attends and Cory teaches at and oh, Cory gave Harvey the job.

This is odd and honestly,  maybe this is just me but  wouldn't Frankie make more sense in a role like this seeing as Cory and Shawn on a better relationship with Frankie towards the end of their high school tenure.  Look,  I know this goes against what  I complained about up-top but my thinking is  wouldn't Frankie make more sense character wise because of the relationship that he was shown to have with Cory and Shawn as it was shown that he didn't actually hate them and grew to consider them his friends.  Unless of course with Harvey, they are trying to show that people can change as they get older.

Now,  I do have one disappointment,  Will Friedle  has confirmed  in numerous interviews that Eric Matthews will not appear on Girl Meets World.  He's said that while Boy Meets World was a part of his life that he cherishes,  he wants to focus on his voice acting career and has moved past that point in his life.  I'm kinda bummed as Eric was one of the best characters on the show and not to have him the sequel series, especially considering that this series focuses on his niece.  And I do have to say  that what I've seen from Riley so far in the trailers,  she certainly has attributes of both Cory and Topanga in her and that's  both a good and bad thing.  Riley needs to be  her own  character first  but   she doesn't have it as bad as Maya, who  it seems like they are trying to make  the female Shawn.  Oh sorry,  Maya is  Riley's best friend and was at first rumored to be Shawn's daughter but that has not confirmed to be true and dear lord, please don't let it be as that would be too annoying.

And the  more I saw  of Maya,  she also reminded me of Sam Puckett from ICarly and that's not a good thing as Sam was a super obnoxious character that they tried to make cool and be the bad girl but it rung hollow.

Being reminded of one of my most despised sitcom characters is not a good thing but I do have hope that Maya will not be as annoying.  At the end of the day,  I want this show to be good but I don't  know,  I have high hopes for it and  I haven't been this excited about a new Disney Channel  show in ages.  I'll admit part of it  is purely nostalgia-based.  Okay,  most of it is purely nostalgia-based but  I grew up with Boy Meets World,  anyone that grew up in the '90s - '00s  grew up with that wonderful show.  As Pinkie put it,  I'm nervouscited.   I love the prospect of a new show where I get to see more of Cory and Topanga and  yes, I know that this isn't their show but  part of my concerns is that while the trailer seems to know that,  by including so many characters from the old show,  I feel like they are trying to lure in old fans and not giving the chance to garner new fans on it's own as a good show or fail on it's own.   I  really do want this show be good and  that's why I'm so anxious about it.  I will admit I do like the theme song.       At the end of the day,  I'll  just wait until this show premieres next month to see how it holds up.  What are your thoughts on Girl Meets World?  Let me  know in the comments.   Until then,  I'll leave you with this.
