Classic Shorts Showcase: How To Hook Up Your Home Theater

Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney. And today, we continue our look at shorts from compliation DVD, Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection.

With that out of the way, let's begin.  How To Hook Up Your Home Theater is a short from 2007 that is a throwback to the old How To shorts featuring Goofy.  I remember seeing this in front of National Treasure: Book of Secrets and I enjoyed it then.   And now,  it holds up rather well.

The Plot

As stated this short is an update on the classic How To shorts and here, we see Goofy trying to hook up a home theater system, so that he can watch the big game.  Like a lot of the great old How To's, it relied heavily on gags with Goofy and they were great from Goofy buying the biggest TV at the store or getting tangled in all the wires and having the end of the short end with him on the football field.

Oh, and I'd be remiss not to mention that there were a couple of great Disney references.

Right here, you see Walt Disney,  Goofy's first animated appearance from Mickey's Revue and a caricature of John Lasster.   Something else of interest to bring up is the method in how this was done as it was done paperless.

The short was partially produced using a new "paperless" production pipeline for Disney, the first major change in production technique for hand-drawn animation at Disney since the introduction of CAPS, and was also an attempt to see if the new digital animation tools could be used to produce a short with the same graphic look as that of a late 1940s, early 1950s cartoon.

The short  does a good job of giving it that old timey look of the classic Goofy shorts and according to the introduction to the short on the Walt Disney Studios Short Films Collection, the animators actually lifted scenes from classic Goofy shorts for this one.  They didn't specify but I think that it was the big game.

They also snuck in another great Goofy reference into the short as the teams were called the Dawgs and the Geefs  Dawg refers to Goofy's original name as Dippy Dawg and Geef was the name that Goofy was given in his everyman shorts typically with Goofy Jr.  All in all, this was a great tribute to classic Goofy shorts.

Narration

Narrator - Corey Burton

Burton did a fantastic job with his narration.  He had the style of the classic narration down that was just fitting for these kinds of shorts and he really brought you into the short.

Character

Goofy voiced by Bill Farmer

This short truly understood Goofy's role in the How To shorts and how he was the everyman that always well, goofed up and his examples contrast what the narrator is saying and they did a great job with the sight gags from the classic Goofy shorts.

My Final Thoughts

This is a great tribute to classic Goofy shorts as it truly understands what made them work and it's clear that the people that worked on this short have a lot of love for Goofy and it totally comes through in this short.  I absolutely suggest this short and you will not be disappointed.  Join me time as we look at...
