A Look at Disney Halloween: Hungry Larry (Star Vs. The Forces of Evil Episode Review)

Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney.  I noticed that I had some slots open during this month and I wanted to rectify by looking at,  two Halloween episodes and a Disney Channel Original Movie that ties into The Creature's Phantom event.  With that outta the way, things are gonna get a little weird, a little wild as we look at the Star Vs. The Forces of Evil Halloween episode, Hungry Larry.

The Plot

The plot is admittedly fairly simple as it's Halloween night and Mr. Diaz wants scare kids with his haunted house but it doesn't go exactly as planned as a kid dressed up as a vampire lets Mr. Diaz know that he's a nice guy but he isn't scary and that puts Mr. Diaz him in a depressed mood.  Honestly, he really didn't put a lot of effort into his decorations as his highlight was an inflatable Frankenstein.

Star with her friend Janna suggests summoning a monster-for-hire known as Hungry Larry but Marco forbids them from doing that but Star being the rebel princess that she isn't, doesn't take no for an answer and goes ahead and summons Hungry Larry.  After saying his name three times, he knocks on the door and seems unassuming.   And I think Janna sums him up best, that he's not scary but creepy.

Star and Janna are let down by his looks and are gonna fire him after they take him to Star's room to make things scarier.  Star sits on the stairs feeling for Mr. Diaz when all of the sudden she hears a scream come from her room and grabs the attention of every kid out there trick-or-treating.   Star tells Marco, what happened and they go investigate and this is what they find.

Star's room is covered in Halloween candy and black salvia.  And we hear from three kids that he's still hungry, Star and Marco are dragged in opposing directions in Star's room and then the bedroom door is slammed closed.  Meanwhile, Mr. Diaz in the shed, he attempts to destroy his Frankenstein balloon with a wood chipper but you can probably figure out how that went.  After seeing a bowl of candy corn that his wife left out for him, he goes back to the house to apologize but the house is completely empty but soon finds himself in Star's room facing off against Hungry Larry and things get intense as we learn that Larry has eaten everyone in the house and yells at Mr. Diaz to get out but Mr. Diaz doesn't take kindly to this and wants his family back and climbs inside of Larry to get his family back.

Something I wish to touch upon here is the lighting and atmosphere presented with Larry after he eats all the kids does a great job of setting up a mood that invokes fear and dread.  Mr. Diaz saves everyone and Larry reveals that this was his plan all along.

. As Hungry Larry shares the sentiment that nothing is more terrifying than a man who has lost everything, revealing this was his plan all along, Rafael angrily tells him to leave.

All in all, this was a fun Halloween episode. Let's move onto characters.

Main Characters

Mr. Diaz voiced by Artt Butler

This was really Mr. Diaz's episode to shine and something I love here is you can really see his personality with his costume as he is trying to be scary but it's undercut by being dressed as an adorable pumpkin.  Easily, the most harmless of Halloween costumes that one could think of, but when push comes to shove, he will do anything to save his family.

Star voiced by Eden Sher

I love Star's costume as she dressed up as Ludo,  her former arch-enemy from the first half of season one.  It's just such a Star thing for her to dress up as him.  But man,  did she make a mess out of things.

Supporting Characters

Marco voiced by Adam McArthur

Marco admittedly didn't get much to do as this episode was more focused on his dad, which is fine because he had some funny moments such as bribing kids to come to his dad's haunted house.

Janna voiced by Abby Elliott

Janna like Marco didn't get a lot of stuff to do but she was fun and her zombie lawyer costume is pretty funny.

Antagonist

Hungry Larry voiced by Billy West

Yes, Doug Funnie is the voice of this creature and at first, he appears unassuming if just creepy but as the episode goes on, you see what he's really like and oof.

And yeah, wow.   That is creepy and messed up.   But it works well for a Halloween episode.

My Final Thoughts

All in all, this is a really fun Halloween episode, that if you have the Disney Now App can find there and I can't suggest this one enough as it is such a blast.
