That Other Movie: An Extremely Goofy Movie

In my last post, I talked about one of my favorite movies “A Goofy Movie” and listed three reasons why I enjoyed the first movie and I said my only complaints were reserved for its sequel. Today, I’m going to talk why I can’t stand this movie.  It does not bother me that this was a direct to video sequel because there have been some decent direct to video sequels such as “The Lion 1 ½”   but that was not the case here.  There were so many mistakes with this movie such as not being back the right character from the first movie.

Speaking of the first movie, what happened to Roxanne?   She was an important character in the first movie and we don’t even get a mention of her in this sequel.   At least, we get Bobby back but he was not as much of an important character as Roxanne.  I mean Max went through all this trouble to impress Roxanne and it is just as though she does not exist in this movie.   We don’t see Roxanne again until an episode of “House of Mouse” and while that is nice she still looks like a teenager whereas Max who is one of the few Disney children to consistently age looks to be twenty-one.    That just seems a little odd.  While it’s nice that we get Bobby back, the people behind this movie couldn’t keep him consistent with his original personality.  Such as the fact they got rid of his cheese obsession, that was one of his few likable traits.    Also since when did he become friends with Max and P.J., it was never implied in the first movie that they were friends.  Bobby was just a guy who was willing to help Max impress Roxanne for the right price.

Since I talked what about they did to Bobby, I feel that now would be excellent time to bring up the changes made to the other characters.   Let’s start with Goofy, the always lovable and ready to make us laugh Goofy.  Not here, Goofy was obviously going through Empty Nest syndrome.  Look I get that he is worried about Max but this is supposed to be a kid’s movie starring Goofy. Kids do not want to see a depressed Goofy; they want the Goofy that makes them laugh.  Granted that is only in the beginning of the film because when Goofy loses his job at the toy factory, he has to go back to college.   Excuse me, I don’t mean go off but what happened to Goofy’s job as a photographer from the store in “A Goofy Movie”.  Perhaps it’s just me but working on an assembly line in a toy factory seems like a step down.  Granted Goofy does become a little more tolerable once he goes to college.  However, I think this movie went a little too far with trying to get Goofy to fit in and not realize his age.  Because when he showed up to class wearing bellbottoms and an afro, I thought “what have they done to you?”  Whereas Goofy is able to redeem himself because of the cute romance with the Miss Marple, Max has no redeeming qualities in this movie.   Max literally became a jerk in this film and that disappointed me the most because Max is one of my all-time favorite Disney characters and to see him act like a jerk just ruined the image I had of this character.    In the first movie, I thought Max was cool and awesome plus he had a good story with a relatable motive.  He wanted to impress Roxanne in hopes, that she would become his girlfriend.   Not here, Max’s motive is to win the College X-Games because he doesn’t want to be the towel boy for the film’s antagonist. I’ll talk more about him later on.    The character of P.J. is okay but I have always liked him because he is a great contrast to his dad, Pete. Even though P.J. does seem to be a little flat and one-sided in this movie.
