Music Fridays # 23: I AM A MAN!

You know for how the silly claims people have made that Disney is just for the kiddies, they have actually produced some tough manly man characters and join me today as I take a look at 4 songs from Disney that make me proud to be a man and make me want to shout "I AM A MAN!" What kind of songs are these? Well, read on to find out.

The Ballad of Davy Crockett - Fess Parker

What better song to start of with than this one? If we are to talk about a song that embraces manhood than The Ballad of Davy Crockett is the perfect start. This song served as the theme song for this serial about The American Legend. Now I have never seen any of the serials. Something that I'll remedy but just take a listen to this song and you know that you are listening to a song about a tough guy. Someone that you don't mess with. Now admittedly it was hard finding the right version but in the end, I had to go with this one as it is sung by Fess Parker, who played Davy Crockett.  This song is just so much fun and I can see how it would get audiences pumped to see Davy in latest adventure. All of the tales that this story weave are fascinating.

Gaston

Our next song comes from perhaps one of my all-time favorite Disney Villains. This song is oozing with how manly, Gaston is.  This song just shows how vein and big-headed, Gaston is.  It clearly shows that everyone thinks he is the best. Mostly because of his muscles.  Though we later see that Gaston isn't as thick-headed as we think.  Though going back to this song, it basically shows how people love Gaston for his manliness. I mean the song outright states that any of the guys in that bar would want to be him and the girls all want to be with him.  It's not hard to see why Gaston thinks so highly of himself when he has people like that surrounding him.

I'll Make a Man Out of You

This is my favorite song from Mulan as it is just a fun song. Now I know that some of you may be thinking, "How does this qualify as a manly song?"  Well sure, the characters that are being trained aren't exactly the best example of manliness but if you take a listen to Shang and watch how he performs in this number. That is how it qualifies and also, I think it shows a nice transition of the characters coming into their own and becoming  tough and hardened. Even if one of them is Mulan, who is well you know female.

Yo-Ho (A Pirate's Life For Me)

Our final song of the day is perhaps one of the most famous Disney Parks songs. From Pirates of The Caribbean, I give you Yo-Ho. This was an obvious choice because well, pirates fit what I was going for and this is just a fun song. And that is the entire point of all of these songs. Once again in this song, we hear the pirates embrace their glorious life as men at sea and they all love what they are doing. They don't give a care as to what anyone thinks and that is greatest idea of manliness. Plus just the way it is sung, gives it that manly vibe.

I hope you have enjoyed this Music Fridays. What are some manly Disney songs that you can think of and who do you think is the most manly Disney character? Join me next week, when I turn the table and look at Disney songs that were either covered or sung by artists who got their start on American Idol.
