Take A Look at Disney

Classic Shorts Showcase: Autumn

Hello & welcome back to Classic Shorts Showcase. After a short break, Showcase is back.  Today, I'll be taking a look at Autumn, a short that is a part of the "4 Seasons" Silly Symphony shorts, where they each show  different parts of the season and Autumn was the third short in the "4 Seasons" Silly Symphony and with us still being in the fall season, I have decided to take a look at this short. So, join me won't you.

The Plot

Admittedly, the plot is rather thin.  The premise is that we are watching animals get ready for winter by gathering wood and finding warm places to stay.  That is all there is to it.  Quite honestly,  you could sum up it in even less words then that but that doesn't make it bad.  It's more of a series of vignettes related to the season. In that regard, it is very similar to the excellent Farmyard Symphony. Really, that is all there is to say here.  Now I should also mention that this is the last time famed Disney animators UB Iwerks and Carl Stalling worked on a Disney project worked before heading over to a new studio.

Memorable Moments

Now seeing as how this short doesn't follow one single character, I have decided to instead focus on what I consider the Memorable Moments from this short.

Squirrel eating corn

This right here had to be one of my favorite gags, watching this little creature eat corn.  While his friends turns the or the cob at the end.  It was just a really cute moment.

Beavers Building their damns

Again,  just watching the beavers build and see them hard at work.

Winter is Coming

Towards the end of the short, you notice that it's getting colder and that means winter is coming and these little animals have to tray and find a way to stay warm and they do. The squirrels go into the trees while the crows take refugee inside of a scarecrow that is seen earlier in the short.

The short ends with the littlest crow still outside but then we see another crow stick his foot out and picks up the little one and takes him in.

My Final Thoughts

Overall, this is a very enjoyable short.  Again, there isn't much in the way of a plot here but this short wasn't trying to tell a story where everything needed to be connected. The basic idea was, it's Autumn and these animals need to get ready for the coming winter. What could we do with that and the animators went to town and made what I find to be a highly enjoyable short.
