Now while, Epic Mickey 2 may not be receiving the same praise as it's predecessor, from what I've played, it's grown on me and the music is good too. Now fair warning, the music in today's article may contain spoilers as these songs are a part of the story in the sequel. Now I'll admit that I haven't made it all the way through but I want to judge the music on it's own and see if it is as good as the music of the first Epic Mickey. Which is the only video game soundtrack I've ever bought. So, let's dive in.
Help Me/Help You
Quick note, The Mad Doctor was the big bad of the first game and the big conflict here is that The Mad Doctor wants to prove that he has redeemed himself and wants to help Wasteland as they are dealing with these quakes that have been attacking Wasteland. Honestly, out of all the songs I've heard in the game thus far, this one has to be my favorite. It is just so much fun and it reminds of a travelling salesman type song. Where the town is weary of what the person has to say, well except for Oswald who wants to trust his old friend. And as The Mad Doctor sings in the song, it's about second chances but knowing that this game like the first relies on choices and consequences, how you play the game will determine whether or not The Mad Doctor has actually changed.
Prescott and The Pumps
Now for an instrumental piece that won't spoil the game. Prescott is one of many gremlins that you'll come across in the game and let's just say that he has a bit of an attitude problem. As for this piece, I like it, I think it's really fun and it has the same charming qualities that the music of the first game had. Something I adore about this series is the great music and this shows me here that they still know how to pump out some great tunes.
The Mad Doctor Isn't Mad
Something I didn't mention is that The Mad Doctor only talks in song and that other voice, you'd heard was Frank Welker voicing Oswald. Again, another short song but I like for what it is. You do get the sense here that The Mad Doctor is trying to redeem himself but this song comes so early in the game that it's wise to keep your guard up.
Ventureland Combat
If you get a Pirates vibe listening to this number, it makes sense as this land in the game is based on Adventureland. Again, this is another number I like. It has big swooping feeling. I would say this does feel epic in scope and just feels big and grandiose. Probably my favorite of the two instrumentals, I've featured here today.
