Music Fridays # 43: Ladies of Disney

Hello and welcome to another edition of Music Fridays.  Today, it's all about the ladies and their songs. I'm taking a look at some of my favorite songs either from or how about the ladies.   Let's begin with one of my favorites in recent memory.

When Will My Life Begin

I know some consider this the weakest song from the film but I disagree, I think it's one of the best from Tangled.  I'll admit I'm a sucker for the pop sound of this song but I love it and this is a song, where you really have to listen to the lyrics to understand Rapunzel's desire.  She  wants to know a life outside the confines  of the tower that Gothel has kept her in for her whole life.  It's a really sweet song with a great message and this is one of the best ways to get the audience to connect to Rapunzel.

God Help The Outcasts

Now we go to a song that's a bit mature in nature compared to the first.  Though this is one of the best songs from this film and in my opinion of the more underrated and understated Disney songs.  Here we see Esmeralda praying fro help from Mother Mary, she doesn't want anything but she's praying for the ones that are in a lesser state than where she is.  It's beautiful and if you know me,  you probably figured out that I was going to file this song under the category of beautifully simple.

Belle (Reprise)

Now as much as I love Belle, both song and character, I feel that the reprise does a better job of bringing the audience into her head and find out what she wants.  While the original is about Belle form the perspective of the town, with the reprise we get to know Belle for who she really is in her own words.

Reflection

This is my second favorite song from Mulan and again just as with Belle (Reprise),  this song sheds some light on Mulan and how she feels. With this song,  she  is at a cross roads, she doesn't know who she truly is because it's not really reflected and I think we've all been there at one point in our lives.

I Can't Believe My Heart

If you recall last week, I said that my favorite Disney song sung by a female is I Won't Say I'm In Love from Hercules.   Well believe it or not,  Meg was supposed to have another song. This one right here.   I like it for what it is and if it had been given to a different character, I think it would've worked better.  Perhaps it's just me but I'm not too sure that this song gels with Meg's personality.   Just as with I Won't Say I'm In Love,  wee see Meg in a vulnerable state and while it does feel authentic, it just felt more authentic with I Won't Say I'm In Love.

Mickey, She's Got a Crush on You

This is one of the cutest songs that I've ever heard and I love it.  It's just so cute hearing a song talking about Minnie's feelings for Mickey.  I've talked about this song in the past but I couldn't pass up another chance talking about this song because it's just so adorable.  I first discovered this song on a CD, I bought at my local Hallmark Store that had all these different songs about Mickey on there and this one has stood out as one of my favorites.  Whenever I listen to this song, I just picture Mickey and Minnie in high school going through  the whole crush thing.  It's one of the cutest songs about Mickey and Minnie, I've ever heard.

There you have it,  my songs from Ladies of Disney.   Join me next week when I take a look at More Country Covers of Disney.  So grab a cowboy hat and join me next Friday as I delve into the genre that shaped my childhood with these Country Covers.
