Hello & welcome back to Classic Shorts Showcase. Today, I'm taking a look at a very cute short, Lullaby Land. With that out of the way, let's begin.
The Plot
While there is a plot, it's not really important here. Though it is rather fascinating to watch as we see this baby fall asleep and enter Lullaby Land. Now when watching this short, it reminded of Wonderland but with baby items. Well except for The Forbidden Forest where there were items that babies shouldn't play such as matches and sharp knifes and hammers and clocks. Which leads to a moment where the baby starts breaking clocks and then we see him at one playing with matches and this leads to the bad guys, The Boogie Men coming out.
To be honest, this image is what drew me to this short. I was looking up shorts to review and this made me go "Whoa, I need to watch this". And then seeing The Boogie Men was quite a sight. And at the end, Sandman came out and put the baby back to sleep. That was a nice touch. This was quite a unique and adorable little short.
Characters
Now I'll be breaking this down into Main, Supporting, & Villain. With that out of the way
Main Character
Baby
The Baby was a cute character and something I liked was that his look clashed with the rest of Lullaby Land. Whereas Lullaby Land had a fantastical look to it, he looks like a real baby. I think that works rather well to show that this is the Baby's dream. You might also say that Lullaby Land is how the little tyke views the world and I like to think that because it makes this short more fascinating in that way. The only thing that works against my theory is at the end it shows the baby asleep in his cradle in the real world but again who's to say this isn't his view.
Stuffed Dog
The Baby's stuffed dog came to life in his dream and in a way, he almost seemed like the baby's protector but he was overshadowed by the gorgeous Lullaby Land and the baby's actions in Lullaby Land.
Supporting Character
The Sandman
Okay, The Sandman was a character that came in towards the latter part of the short and he was less a character and more of a plot device to get the baby back to sleep. There really wasn't much to him other then that and I'm sorry but he is so dorky looking. I'm sorry but when I think of Sandman this is what I think of.
That's an awesome movie by the way. See It! Okay, just had to throw that in there.
Villains
The Boogie Men
These guys were just so freaky and cool. They were so interesting to look at and the fact that they started out as smog monsters and then turned into these creatures of the night after falling into a bathtub while the Baby was trying to escape. That was really cool. I honestly wish they were in the short a bit longer.
My Final Thoughts
This is a pretty good short. I thought it was a fun watch and so creative. I honestly would love to spend more time in Lullaby Land.
