Hello & welcome back to Theater Week. Today on Theater Week, we are taking a look lyrics from songs of the different plays that have stuck with me. Now I will admit that we will have multiple lyrics from the same play and perhaps even the same song on here.
6. Illusions May Shatter but Memories Stay. The Things That Matter I Lost on The Way - Mr. Banks (Good For Nothing/Being Mrs. Banks (reprise))
Our first line comes from Mary Poppins and it is delivered by Mr. Banks. This line is important as it comes after Mr. Banks has lost everything he thought was important to him. I.E. his job but this also serves as his wake up call, that isn't the most important thing in his life. No, that is his family and he lost the relationship that he could've had with his family because he wasn't focused on his family. And I think with this line and this song in general, he's taking a step towards trying to get his family back.
5. How Could She Suddenly Disappear Completely Suddenly into thin Water? It's Been Two Whole Days And I Don't Where She's Gone - King Triton (If Only)
This is from the only play on this list that I have not seen and I gotta be honest, I had the hardest time choosing from this song. I knew it was going to be from this song for this play and I knew that it had to be one of Triton's lines. As they are all very good but the more, I looked at it, I had to go with this one. As I feel with this line, it perfectly captures Triton as a father and shows how he misses his daughter and is deeply worried about her and doesn't know what to do while Ariel is missing.
4. Folks we Finally Got A Headline. "Newsies Crushed as Bulls Attack" Crutchie's Calling Me. Dumb Crip's Just Too Damn Slow. Guy's Are Fightin', Bleedin'. Fallin' . Thanks to good ole' Captain Jack. - Jack Kelly (Santa Fe)
Our next entry comes from Newsies. Brought to us by Jack Kelly and the big emotions I take from these are frustration, anger and regret. As you see this number comes after the Newsies are easily taken down by Pulitzer's goons and Crutchie is hauled off to The Refugee. Let's start with frustration, Jack is frustrated that he could not protect one of his friends from being taken away and because of that he is angry at himself and puts the blame of Crutchie's capture on himself. This is also where regret comes into play. Now these feelings weigh heavily on Jack as he considers calling off the strike at one point as he doesn't want any other Newsie to get hurt. Here this is just basically Jack shouting out at the world and venting. He doesn't know where else to turn to and as we see here, he puts all the blame on himself as he is the one that initiated the strike and is the leader for the Newsies. It's heartbreaking really when I hear this.
3. And In My Twisted Face. There's Not the Slightest Trace. Of Anything that Even Hints at Kindness. And my Tortured Shape. No Comfort, No Escape. I See but Within is Utter Blindness. - Beast (If I Can't Love Her)
Yeah, I've talked about this song a lot in the past and as mentioned prior this song comes after Beast hears Belle saying some rather unkind things about him and this upsets Beast. I think what these lines do is show Beast's human side and that he doesn't believe he can ever love and more importantly, he doesn't believe that he could ever be loved. For who could love a Beast? These lines are important as it shows Beast is still at heart human and does hurt. Gah, why do I go for the sad songs? Who knows?
2. I'm Trying To Hold On. Just Waiting To Hear Your Voice. One Word, Just a Word will Do. To End This Nightmare. - Simba (Endless Night)
Yeah, it was really hard narrowing down this one. Endless Night in my opinion is one of the saddest Broadway songs. I fought with myself over with what line was going to end up here but looking at this song again, I had to go with this one. Why? Well because I think this conveys how Simba feels lost without his father there to guide him and he just wants his father to tell him something anything. Reassurance that everything will be okay but he can't get that from Mufasa as he is no longer living. It also perfectly captures how scared Simba is and that's why I had to go with this choice.
1. Watch Me Stand! Watch Me Run - Crutchie (Santa Fe (Prologue))
Our # 1 comes from Newsies and it comes from the first song in the play. Why this line? Well, for me it is the most personal. One thing the film didn't do that the play does is show us how Crutchie feels about having to rely on using his crutch. When he says "Watch me stand!", he is excited and happy at the prospect of not having to use his crutch but after he says "Watch me run". It's almost as though he comes to his realization, that he will always have to use his crutch and you can hear how deflated he is at this prospect. As I was saying this line is the most personal for me as it takes me back to a year I sometimes want to forget. As I've mentioned in the past, during my Senior year of high school, I spent most of it in a wheelchair and I hated that thing. I wanted nothing more then to be able to walk the halls of my high school and not be bound to that stupid chair. God, how I hated that thing. Thinking about that time is hard for me, it's make me angry and sad at the same time because I was limited and that hurt my pride. As dumb as it may sound, I felt incomplete. So just hearing Crutchie say this line is hard for me because it makes me think of that time of my life, I'd rather forget. So yeah, this one is different as the emotions aren't necessarily from Crutchie but rather, this is about my emotions and how hearing this makes me feel. I'll admit each time, I hear this I am on the verge of tears.
There you have it, I hope that you have enjoyed this Top 6. Join me tomorrow as I continue Theater Week as with a Screen To Stage of...
