Hello & welcome back to A Look at Disney. Today, I'm introducing a new segment called What Happened In, in which I take a look at various moments throughout Disney's history starting with my birth year 1989. I'll freely admit that this was inspired by Les' article on what he's older then and for those wondering, I only intend to go up to 2011, the year I started blogging. Now what will be covered on this, you may ask. Films, TV, & Theme Parks. With that out of the way, let's begin.
Film
Now to clarify, I'll be going over theatrical releases, re-releases, & Home video releases. With that out of the way, let's get this started.
Theatrical Releases
Film
Now to clarify, I'll be going over theatrical releases, re-releases, & Home video releases. With that out of the way, let's get this started.
Theatrical Releases
Honey, I Shrunk The Kids
On June 23rd, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids was released to theaters. A pretty good film and I may have to review it down the road.
Cheetah
On August 18th, a film titled Cheetah was released to theaters. I'll be honest, I've never heard of this film until now. I may have to look into this film for a future review.
The Little Mermaid
On November 14th, one of my all time favorite movies made waves as it started what is known as the Disney Renaissance and that film is of course, The Little Mermaid. Gosh, I love this film so much.
Re-Releases
Only Two rel-releases to mention.
The Rescuers
On March 17th, The Rescuers was re-released and I'll be honest, I know a lot of people prefer the sequel but I think this one is just fine.
Peter Pan
On July 14th, Peter was re-released to theaters. Very fun film indeed and all I can think about is how cool, it would've been to see this on the big screen.
Home Releases
On September 28th, Bambi, Dumbo and The Sword In The Stone were released on home video.
TV
Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers
On March 4th, Rescue Ranger made it's television debut on Disney Channel and would go on to become a staple of The Disney Afternoon.
Mickey Mouse Club
Interesting fact, many people count this as a '90s show but it actually debuted in '89 and as I went over in my MMC retrospective, this version was more akin to something like All That, where they had skits and sketches instead of theme days. Still, it was fun and a lot of big names such as Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Ryan Gosling got their start on this show.
Super DuckTales
Super DuckTales airs on NBC on March 26th marking the debut of Gizmoduck/Fenton Crackshell. This TV special would later be cut up into five episodes for later airings and Gizmoduck would go on to enjoy a pretty good run through two of The Disney Afternoon's best shows.
Theme Parks
Disney's MGM Studios
On May 1st, my favorite Disney theme parks, Disney MGM Studios opened. How much do I love this park, just go read my Top 6 Hollywood Studios article to see.
Typhoon Lagoon
On June 15th, one of Disney's water parks, Typhoon Lagoon opened. I'll be honest I've never been here but I would like to go.
Star Tours
On July 12th, Star Tours opened at Tokyo Disneyland. Fun fact, Tokyo Disneyland was the very first Disney park, I ever went to. I was about 5 or 6, when I went. And just to save time, this same attraction opened at Disney MGM Studios in December of this year on December 15th.
Splash Mountain
On July 17th, one of my favorite rides made it's debut at Disneyland based on a Disney film that still hasn't seen the light of day (Grr!), that's right, Splash Mountain opened at Disneyland and as a matter of fact, there was even a pretty bad Ernest special leading up to it.
Wonders of Life
On October 30th, the Wonders of Life pavilion opened at EPCOT Center. Y'know, I don't think I ever to the Wonders of Life and now I won't have the chance because it's been closed since '07. Bummer! Ah well!
Well, this is the first installment of What Happened In, I hope you guys liked this one. Peace!
