Argh, welcome back all to a new Music Fridays. As after a long hiatus, it has returned and today we hit the high seas as I take a look at songs of the pirates. To kick things off, we go to Peter Pan to find out what A Pirate's Life is like.
A Pirate's Life
This song is just so perfect and a great introduction for Hook's crew. Sure, it's short but it just full of joy and makes the idea of being a pirate sound cool. There are some nice touches here such as the mention of Davey Jones. I also find that it has a nice touch of showing the men bond over one thing, being pirates. A little on the short side but still a good song all the same.
Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)
When talking pirates, this is the song that always comes to mind first. It is just so much fun and almost as iconic as the ride it's from. While the song from Peter Pan only dabbled in the life of a pirate, this one goes all in and talks about what it's really like. Whereas the first song was only an appetizer, this one is a full entree. If you like pirates, this song is the one for you as I feel it glorifies the pirate lifestyle quite well. Besides that it is just a really fun song. Plus you gotta love the background noises such as the dog barking along with the song.. Plus I love how some of the characters sound drunk throughout this. Okay for the next song, I'm technically breaking one of my rules as Disney didn't originally own this property but they did release this film. From Muppet Treasure Island...
Shiver My Timbers
Okay normally I wouldn't do this as it goes against one of the rules I set up for the blog being that for reviews and Music Fridays, I really only wanted to focus on stuff that was already from Disney and not feature properties they bought. But I had to throw that rule out today as I really wanted to feature a song from this film. It was a tough decision but to me this is the the perfect pirate song from this film. It just so sounds so big and the story being told is amazing. Honestly, take away the lyrics and you still a very good pirate story. Plus whoever thought murder would be mentioned in a song featured in Muppet film. I didn't. This has to be one of the darkest songs from a Muppet film. Also I just love the way Shiver My Timbers is sung. I don't know why but it seems to have feeling of eeriness to it that I really like.
Guilty of Being Innocent of Being Jack Sparrow
Okay, a little bit of background on this one. I bought the soundtrack to Pirates 4 because I've always thought the music was good in these films. Can't say the same thing about third and fourth films though. By the way, Pirates 2 is my favorite in the series. Now as for this number, I honestly feel that it is the best piece from Pirates 4. I do feel it matches Jack Sparrow quite well. Perhaps not as well as the music from the first 2 films but I really like this piece and the adventurous nature that it brings. Each time I listen to this song, I can picture being part of Captain Sparrow's crew. I mean as much as I may rag on Disney's over reliance on the character, I still like him and I think going on an adventure with Jack Sparrow would be really fun and I find this to be the perfect music for that adventure. Now there was also a remix done by DJ Earworm and now I'm not overly familiar with his work but if this is anything to go by, I think I'll pass. I don't know but to me the remix seems to lose what made Hans Zimmer's version work so well and instead sounds like Jack Sparrow met Tron (I'm sure there's a fanfic of that somewhere). But it doesn't sound good. Really the only nice thing that I can say about the remix is the clanging of the swords was cool. Other than that I'd pass on the remix and stick with the good version.
There you have it. I hope you have enjoyed my look at these pirates songs. Join me next week as we go Broadway with a very special guest.
